Часть текста: miraculous element in the gospel narratives? I think that to accept or to believe the miracles of the gospel is a complete impossibility for a sane person in our times. We cannot believe the miracles not because we wish, or we do not wish to believe in them, but because such narratives, having a certain meaning for people of the 4-th century, have none for us. If Christ in body ascended the sky, he is ascending it still and never will reach the seat at the right hand of his father. And the same stands for all the miracles of the gospel. I think that the faith in the miracle excludes the faith in the teaching. If Christ could make all men healthy and rich (if he could make wine out of water, he could make all men rich) he should have done it instead of teaching men how to be blessed without health and riches. Those who accept the miracles, accept them only because they do not want to accept the teaching. 2) The divinity of Christ? The chief meaning of the definition of God is that He is a being different from man, above him and therefore if I...

Часть текста: P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small clique, composed of persons utterly alien in thought and aspiration and altogether inferior to those whom they enslave. These causes, as one can easily see from your letter, from the articles in «Free Hindustan», from the highly interesting writings of the Hindoo Swami Vivekananda and others, are in accord with that which causes the distress of all the peoples of our time; in the absence of a rational religious teaching which, while elucidating the meaning of life to the people in an equal way, would also make clear the higher law, which should be a guide to conduct, and in the...

Часть текста: have changed. It always seemed strange and incredible to me, that such a thoughtful and non-superstitious people as the Japanese could accept and believe all those absurd dogmas, having nothing in common with Christian truth, which constitute the substance of ecclesiastic Christianity, both of Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Lutheranism. On the contrary, I always thought, that the people both of Japan and China could not escape to accept true Christianity, which alone has the answer to those questions of life, that now face all men and call for a solution, which neither Buddhism nor Confucianism can give. All the great teachers of humanity have at all time preached the brotherhood of men, but it is Christianity alone, which points out the way, whereby this can be attained. You have translated my works, such as «the Kreuzer Sonata» etc., but I very much wish to make the Japanese public familiar with true Christianity, as I think its founder conceived it. This, as far as I could, I expounded in my book: «The kingdom of god is within you». I think, these books or, at least, an exposition of their contents might be of interest to the Japanese people and might show them, that Christianity is not a collection of miracle narratives, but a very srtict exposition of that idea of human life, which gives wise neither to despair, nor to indifference about ones conduct, but which leads to a most definite moral activity. I advised your friends to order from Geneva those books, which you would like to have. But if you wish it, I will myself send you for translation the book, on which I am now engaged. As far, as I have...

Часть текста: on our brethern not as on animals by violence, but by sweet reasonableness (as Mat[t]h[ew] Arnold 2 termed it) which is the only way to act thoroughly and durably on reasonable beings. Hoping that my bad English will not hinder you to understand what I mean to say, I remain, dear Sir, yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 15 Dec. 1902. Г. 1902. Часть текста: alone upwards of one million are in use. Your fame is world-wide, and I am sure that a message from you would be eagerly received by millions of people who could not help from being impressed with the intimate personality of your own words, which through this medium would be preserved for all time. Of course the making of these records would be so arranged as to inconvenience you as little as possible, and I doubt if the whole operation would take more than an hour. If yon can oblige me in this matter, I will have one or two of my assistants go to your home with the necessary apparatus at any time that you may indicate. Please accept the assurances of my high personal regard for you and your work, and believe me. Very truly yours. Thomas A. Edison Перевод: 22 июля 1908 Милостивый государь. Часть текста: of people confessing the Christian doctrine on Sundays in halls that they call churches. But I think, that these assemblies ought not to be devoted, as they usually are, to public and uniform public prayers, firstly, because the repetition on Sunday in the same words is perfectly useless, as it very soon becomes a mechanical procedure; secondly and chiefly, because in the Gospels this error is plainly pointed out and it is there definitely said (Math. VI), that one should not pray in public places, but in solitude, which is corroborated both by the reason and the experience of every man, who has ever sincerely prayed to God, as the assembly of people only distracts, makes one’s thoughts wander and diverts them. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms. One may suggest, that men of the same spirit, meeting together on Sunday, should bring to their meeting such religious books or articles which they find in ancient and modern literature and read and discuss them together; one ...

Часть текста: of Christ to his 70 disciples, when they returned from preaching and boasted of their success, saying that everywhere the devils were subject unto them: «In this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather, because your names are written in heaven». In other words: seek not exterior success visible to all men, do not count your proselytes, as do the churchmen & the salvation army, 1 but seek to be in the truth, never to deviate from it & success, thoough perhaps invisible to you, will follow, will certainly follow, because when a man is in the truth he will act and his action will inevitably have the most fruitful results, if even they will not be visible to him. The same is expressed in the words «Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness & all these things shall be added unto you»; & in the words: «Be ye wise as serpents, & harmless as doves». Truth in order to influence men should be complete, not clipped, not adapted to the life of men of the world. And this is always being forgotten by mankind. And owing to this the most powerful efforts have been and are yet lost in vain. Precious is not that community which we may organize at...

Часть текста: and that therefore if those who are trying to serve Him sincerely and to the best of their ability are not all able to understand such abstract questions alike, he cannot demand of them faith in that which they are not able to accept. Sincerity is enough for God. And the facts, you have become acquainted with in this book are, I think sufficient for dispelling any doubt as to the sincerity and faithfulness before their God of these people who are sacrificing their lives for what they believe to be His will. I think we would be discrediting our common God if we were each of us to attribute to Him insistance upon those theological tenets in which we differ between ourselves owing to our human limitations. Let us, while adhering, each one of us to the light wе have, be sufficiently tolerant and broad minded towards each others, to have confidence both in each others conscientiousness and in God’s power to enlighten and correct those deficiencies in faith we think we remark in one another. With...

Часть текста: love and reasonable principles, voluntarily accepted by all. Such a state can be attained only by the development of true religion. By the words «true religion» I mean the fundamental principles of all religions which are 1) the consciousness of the divine essence of human soul and 2) respect for its manifestation — human life. Your religion is very old and very profound in its metaphysical definition of the relation of man to the spiritual All — the Atman; but I think it was maimed in its moral, i. e. practical application to life; by the existence of caste. This practical application to life, so far as I know, has been made only by Jainism, 1 Buddhism and some of your sects, such as Kabir Panchis 2 in which the fundamental principle is the sacredness of life and consequently the prohibition to take the life of any living being, especially of man. All the evils that you experience — the famine and chat is still more important, the depravement of your people by factory life — will last as long as your people consent to kill their fellowmen and to be soldiers (Sepoys). Parasites feed only on unclean bodies. Your people must try to be morally clean and in so far as they are clean from murder or readiness to do it they will be free from the regime under which they labour now. I quite agree with you thet you ought to be thankful for all that has been done by the English — for your well being — and should help them in all things tending to the civilization of your people; but you should not help the English in their...

Часть текста: 27 1910. Iasnaya Poliana. Dear Miss, To the two questions you put in your letter I can give you one answer for both. We can not live a reasonable life without an ideal of perfection before us. But we must know that the ideal of perfection can never be attained so that our aim is not to live up to it but only approach it as much as we can. The ideal of perfection in the sexual question is in my opinion complete chastity. But if a man or woman can not attain it the next approach to it is marriage in which again man and woman ought to try to be as chaste as possible and moreover accept as a sacred duty the bringing up and education of children which may be the result of marriage. As to the providing for old age I think that the ideal of perfection of life is to live it only in the present moment, whilst all our cares for the future make us deviate from the true path. Wishing you success in the life you have chosen I am dear Miss Янв. 14 / 27 1910.
