Н. читает Диккенса «Our Mutual Friend» и говорит, что читает не с таким удовольствием, как года два тому назад: или потому, что это не из лучших его произведений, или — возраст. Л. Н-чу сегодня лучше — и ноге и желудку. Александра Львовна вечером уезжала в Москву по финансовым делам. Так как Л. Н-чу лучше, Мария Николаевна торопится в Пирогово, а оттуда в монастырь. Соскучилась по нему. 2 августа. Л. Н-чу вчера и особенно сегодня значительно лучше. Воспаление вен на берце и в середине бедра прошло. Теперь только на внутренней стороне колена довольно сильно и повыше до половины бедра менее воспалено. Л. Н. сегодня позвал Ф. А. Страхова на балкон и с 3.30 до 4 беседовал с ним. I am sorry that Tchertkoff adressed himself through you to the Society of Friends, and will avow it to you, that it is very disagreable to me, that I have something to do with this matter. 2 If I thought, that it is good for a Christian to have money at his disposal and that good could be done by money, I would have kept my fortune and would help people by my money. But as I think, that a Christian ought not to have any property and that it is impossible to do any good through money, I can never ask for money, nor for me, nor for anybody else. If people find right, as you do, to give their money to other men and will do it through me, as they did in the time of the famine, I will do as they wish, but I would rather not have anything to do with money matters, which are always full of sin. And this is an example of it. You are not rich, but nevertheless you gave a good sum of money with the best wishes, and this gift of yours has awakened in me very bad feelings: it seemed to me, that you must reproach me of inconsistency or in want of delicacy, if not asking, letting others ask money for my friends from strangers, when the members of my family are rich. I have never denied or outhorised anyone to deny the authenticity of the articles on the Famine which appeared under my name in the «Daily Telegraph». I know that thes articles are the translation of the paper which I wrote for the Review: «Questions of Philosophy and Psychology» on the Famine and forwarded to you for translation into English. Although I have not read all the articles, 1 1 have no reason to call in question the accuracy of your translation, seeing that I have already had ample proofs of your fidelity and accuracy in translating. I can only explain the telegram you have received by a letter written by my wife to the «Moskovski Vedomosti» denying the assertion that I had send any articles to any foreing periodical and repudiating certain extracts from the «Daily Telegraph» affirming with reason that they were garbled till they had become almost unrecognisable. 2 I deeply regret the annoyance caused you by my article. Часть текста: several years laboured under various legal disabilities. The prejudice against colour and in some respect against Asiatics, is intense in that country. It is largely due, so far as Asiatics are concerned, to trade jealousy. The climax was reached three years ago, when a law passed specially apllicable to Asiatics 1 , which I and many others considered to be degrading and calculated to unman those to whom it was applicable. I felt that submission to a law of this nature, was inconsistent with the spirit of true religion. I and some of my friends were, and still are firm believers in the doctrine of nonresistance to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters in the Transvaal gaols....
