Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small clique, composed of persons utterly alien in thought and aspiration and altogether inferior to those whom they enslave. These causes, as one can easily see from your letter, from the articles in «Free Hindustan», from the highly interesting writings of the Hindoo Swami Vivekananda and others, are in accord with that which causes the distress of all the peoples of our time; ...

Dear young friend, Your letter gave me great pleasure. I think that you are quite right in your appreciation of the church and state superstition. But I don’t agree with you in your idea that the brotherhood of men is the aim to which ought to tend all our activity. The brotherhood of men is not an aim to which we must tend but the necessary result of our rightly, by our religious consciousness, i. e. by the establishment of the relation of our life to the All, to God, directed activity. — This religious consciousness requires from us a strongly definite line of conduct and the brotherhood of men is only one of the many goods which necessarily results from such a conduct. May be that you are of the same conviction and therefore what I say to you is quite useless. In any case I think that you are in the right way and I wish you progress on it. I knew the teaching of Krishna before, but never had such a clear insight of it as I got from both parts of your book. The metaphysical religious idea of the doctrine of Krishna, so well exposed in your book, is the eternal and universal foundation of all true philosophies and all religions. Часть текста: strange and incredible to me, that such a thoughtful and non-superstitious people as the Japanese could accept and believe all those absurd dogmas, having nothing in common with Christian truth, which constitute the substance of ecclesiastic Christianity, both of Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Lutheranism. On the contrary, I always thought, that the people both of Japan and China could not escape to accept true Christianity, which alone has the answer to those questions of life, that now face all men and call for a solution, which neither Buddhism nor Confucianism can give. All the great teachers of humanity have at all time preached the brotherhood of men, but it is Christianity alone, which points out the way, whereby this can be attained. You have translated my works, such as «the Kreuzer Sonata» etc., but I very much wish to make the Japanese public familiar with true Christianity, as I think its founder conceived it. This, as far as I could, I expounded in my book: «The kingdom of god is within you». I think, these books or, at least, an exposition of their contents might be of interest to the Japanese people and might show them, that Christianity is not a collection of miracle narratives, but a very srtict exposition of that idea of human life, which gives wise neither to despair, nor to indifference about ones conduct, but which leads to a most definite moral activity. I advised your friends to order from Geneva those books, which you would like to have. But if you wish it, I will myself send you for translation the book, on which I am now engaged. Every man and woman ought to know and to believe that it would be better for him or for her to be completely chaste (in marriage or out of it) and to have no sexual intercourse at all. But if you ask what will be the consequences of such a belief (if such belief should become common to all, which cannot be before many and many centuries). I will answer you that I don’t know and don’t wish to know, because it is no business of mine: what I know is that for my soul and for everybody’s soul it will always be better to be chaste, than to indulge in sexual love. And this I know perfectly in my conscience, and you know the same, and this is business of mine, because it concerns my soul of which I have the charge. (You must excuse my bad English and try to understand what I mean).
