In regard to your letter, the one before last, in which you write that soon you will have formed a community, I wished to answer you the following: Of course one can not but desire the largest spreading of that which one regards as the truth, and not only as an abstract truth, but as a practical one, such a truth, the acceptation of which would deliver men from their miseries and give them the greatest welfare; but, strange though it seems to say so nothing has so much hindered the spreading of the truth, as the too hasty desire to make others accept it. I have always been deeply affected by the seldom noticed words of Christ to his 70 disciples, when they returned from preaching and boasted of their success, saying that everywhere the devils were subject unto them: «In this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather, because your names are written in heaven». In other words: seek not exterior success visible to all men, do not count your proselytes, as do the churchmen & the salvation army, 1 but seek to be in the truth, never to deviate from it & success, thoough perhaps invisible to you, will follow, will certainly follow, because when a man is in the truth...

Mais si je me figure l’état de repos, sans ennuie et avec les- tranquilles jouissances de l’amour et de l’amitié — c’est le comble du bonheur pour moi! — Au reste on ne ressent le charme du repos qu’après la fatigue et des jouissances de l’amour qu’après la privation.—Me voila privé, depuis quelque temps, de l’uncomme de l’autre, c’est pour cela que j’y aspire si vivement. — II faut m’en priver encore. Pour combien de temps? Dieu le sait. — Je ne saurai dire pourquoi; mais je sens qu’il le faut — La religion et l’expérience que j’ai de la vie (quelque petite qu’elle soit) m’ont appris que la vie est une épreuve. — Pour moi elle est plus qu’une épreuve, c’est encore l’expiation de mes fautes. J’ai dans l’idée, que l’idée, si frivole, que j’ai eu d’aller faire- un voyage au Caucase — est une idée qui m’a été inspiré d’en haut. Унтер-офицер, нахмурившись и проворчав какое-то ругательство, надвинулся грудью лошади на Балашева, взялся за саблю и грубо крикнул на русского генерала, спрашивая его: глух ли он, что не слышит того, чтò ему говорят. Балашев назвал себя. Унтер-офицер послал солдата к офицеру. Не обращая на Балашева внимания, унтер-офицер стал говорить с товарищами о своем полковом деле и не глядел на русского генерала. Необычайно странно было Балашеву после близости к высшей власти и могуществу, после разговора три часа тому назад с государем и вообще привыкшему...

Свид. Свид. о происх. и аттестатъ». J’ai donc tout de suite envoyé à la poste, pour savoir, si ces papiers y étaient, mais il n’y avait rien. — Je suis allé le même jour à la chancellerie du Général Brimer4 pour demander si les papiers dont me parle N[icol]as seront suffisants, on m’a répondu, que si I’Указъ объ отставкњ,5 n’y est pas, je ne pourrai pas être reçu; mais que probablement il devait y être. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It would be too long and unnecessary to state the reasons why I did not answer you till now. 2 Please excuse me for it. I hope and desire that this letter of mine will find you in the same place, in good health and in the same good disposition towards me, in which yours was written. I did not quite understand through your letter, nor through your book — your conception of life, and would be very thankful if you would explain to me your religious views. I am very much interested in the religious beliefs of the Japanese. I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man, what is the meaning of the life that he is obliged to live. You speak in your letter of the Russian revolution and the reforms that are to be in Japan. I think that there is only one revolution and one reform impending everywhere in the world: it is the destruction of not only all great states, but of all kind of states, the liberation of men from obedience to human power.
