Naturally the Vedic religion, as one of the most ancient and profound, must take in these series the first place. Я думал о жизни мира и о своей жизни и пришел к заключению, что люди живут дурно, и я жил очень дурно, и от этого очень страдают, и постарался уяснить себе, как бы надо было жить людям, чтобы меньше делать зла и меньше страдать, и уяснение это нашел в учении Христа. И вот изложил это учение, как я его понял, и так, что если бы люди следовали ему, то они были бы и счастливее и лучше. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters in the Transvaal gaols. Some of these have been very poor men, earning their livelihood from day to day. Часть текста: you that I do not approuve of socialism and am sorry to know that the most spiritually advanced part of your, so clever and energetic people, has taken from Europe the very feeble, illusory and fallacious theory of socialism, which in Europe is beginning to be abandoned. Socialism has for its aim the satisfaction of the meanest part of human nature: his material wellbeing and by the means it proposes can never attain them. The true wellbeing of humanity is spiritual i. e. moral and includes the material wellbeing. And this higher goal can be attained only by religious i. e. moral perfection of all the unites which compose nations and humanity. By religion I understand the reasonable belief in a (general for all humanity) law of God which practically is exposed in the precept of loving every man and doing to everybody what one wishes to be done to you. I think that Love is God, is life itself, is that, what is godly in man, and that Love, which is God and therefore infinite, being enclosed in man, tends to expand itself, and that is the motion of life, which we feel in ourselves, and that the unique means for Love to manifest itself and to expand is Truth. Falsehood, and especially falsehood against oneself, hinders Love to manifest itself and to expand. Therefore truth is so necessary and is the first of our duties; therefore also all the so often hypocritically used admonitions to love one’s neighbour are false and vain. Love is God and God is infinite, and man cannot augment God. All what a man can and must do, is to put aside all hindrances for the manifestation of God, i. e. Love, which is in him. And there is only one thing, that hinders this manifestation: that is falsehood. And not to think and to speak lies, when a man knows, that what he thinks and what he says is not true, is in the power of man. Therefore the first duty of man, who wishes to live a real life, is to be truthful in thoughts, words and deeds. And to this every man can tend and attain this «but».
