To day I received the «Freedom». 1 I was very glad to read, what you write about Anarchists. I thought always, that they must be onesided Christian, as are socialists and communists. Sutaieff, 2 of whom I think you have heard, a peasant with radical Christian views, when he was asked, how they will manage so sustain the Christian life and what they will oppose to agressive violence, answered with greatest conviction, that we, christians, have something, which is stronger, than the armies of the whole world, and to which nothing can resist, — it is christian love. You can find his «moyen» not sufficient, but he has a system and is consequent in proposing his «moyen», because he believes in it. But I never heard from any socialist, communist or anarchist an explanation, how the communistic or socialistic system will work, why will the egoistic men cease to be egoistic, and what will prompt them to sustain a system, which, will not be advantageous for them personally, and never could comprehend, what advantage will have anarchy over the existing state of things, or how could anarchy be founded and last, if the hearts of men are not changed, if men have not accepted the Christian point of view. Часть текста: was advantageous for them, so also at the present time the wealthy classes use all their power for the retention of indirect slavery based upon landed property. In Russia, where people have never recognised landed property, this infamous action is particularly loathsome on the part of a stupid and coarse government which is endeavouring not only to retain the slaves in their servitude, but also by depraving the people to intensify their slavery in the future. I regard as stupid the action of our present government, because if it had put into practice Henry Georgeis principle that land cannot become exclusive property, — a principle always recognised and still recognised by the great mass of the Russian peasantry, — this measure alone, more effectually than all the acts of violence and cruelty now being accomplished by the government, would have pacified the people, and rendered impossible the codtinuation of the revolution. Whereas the Russian government has had recourse to a measure pricisely contrary to such an one by encouraging in every way the transference of the land from communal ownership to private individual ownership. 1 In this I see the government's astounding stupidity. Whilst in those measures which the government applies for the repression of the dissafection amongst the people naturally flowing from their want in land, is manifested the government’s astounding cruelty. Therefore the activity of the Single-Tax League organised in England is especially gladdening. Henry George is especially to be appreciated by those who profess Christianity in its true sense, for not only are the foundations of his teaching, but also his methods truly Christian. Dear Mr. Crosby, I write to you this letter only to tell you, that Mr. Vladimir Tchertkoff, of whom I am sure, you have heard from me, and who will adress you on behalf of some literary matters, i. e. about publications of some translations of my writings, is a very dear friend of mine, and you will oblige me in helping him in his work. From a letter, that I received from a contributor to the «Labour Prophet», I guess, that you have communicated my opinion about his paper to the editor. I thank you for it, because I appreciate very much his work and I wish him to know it. Henry George has sent me all his books. I know some of them, but some others, as the «Perplexed Philosopher» and others, were new to me. The more I know of him, the more I esteem him and am astonished at the indifference of the civilized world to his work. If the new Tsar were to ask me, what I would advise him to do, I would say to him: use your autocratic power to abolish the land property in Russia and to introduce the single tax system; and then give up your power and the people a liberal constitution. All what you write in your letter has been heard and read by me hundreds of times, and I was always astonished to see that good and religious people should prefer such strange, contrary to reason and complicate theories as yours 1 to the simple belief in God and man’s relation to him as his servant — a belief that gave and gives me in all circumstances of my life a perfect guide in my conduct and tranquility and gladness of heart in life and coming death.
