Часть текста: the doctrine of nonresistance to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters in the Transvaal gaols. Some of these have been very poor men, earning their livelihood from day to day. The result has been that their wives and children have had to be supported out of public contributions, also largely raised from passive resisters. This has puff a severe strain upon British Indians, but in my opinion they have risen to the occasion. The struggle still continues and one does not know when the end will come. This, however, some of us at least have seen most clearly, viz — that passive resistance will and can succeed where brute force must fail. We also notice that in so far as the struggle har been prolonged, it has been due largely to our weakness, and hence to a belief having been engendered in the mind of the Government that we would not be able to stand continued suffering. Together with a friend, I have come here to see the Imperial authorities, and to...

«То my mind unless we conceive God as engaged in a continual struggle to surpass himself, — as striving at every birth to make a better man than before, we are conceiving nothing better, than an omnipotent snob». 1 Об остальном же вашем рассуждении о боге и о зле повторяю слова, которые я высказал, как вы пишете, о вашем «Man and Superman», 2 а именно, что вопросы о боге, о зле и добре слишком важны для того, чтобы говорить о них шутя. И потому откровенно скажу вам, что заключительные слова вашего письма произвели на меня очень тяжелое впечатление: «suppose the world were only one of God’s jokes, would you work any the less to make it a good joke instead of a bad one» — «предположите, что мир есть только одна из божьих шуток. Разве вы в силу этого меньше старались бы превратить его из дурной шутки в хорошую?» Ваш Лев Толстой. Bernard Shaw. 9 May 1910 Jasnaya Poliana. Toula. Russia. My ...

Часть текста: not all able to understand such abstract questions alike, he cannot demand of them faith in that which they are not able to accept. Sincerity is enough for God. And the facts, you have become acquainted with in this book are, I think sufficient for dispelling any doubt as to the sincerity and faithfulness before their God of these people who are sacrificing their lives for what they believe to be His will. I think we would be discrediting our common God if we were each of us to attribute to Him insistance upon those theological tenets in which we differ between ourselves owing to our human limitations. Let us, while adhering, each one of us to the light wе have, be sufficiently tolerant and broad minded towards each others, to have confidence both in each others conscientiousness and in God’s power to enlighten and correct those deficiencies in faith we think we remark in one another. With fraternal good wishes, I am Yours faithfully. 17-го окт. 1897.

Часть текста: against the harsh, of meekness and love against pride and violence, is every year making itself more and more felt here among us also, especially, in one of the very sharpest of the conflicts of the religious law with the wordly laws — in refusals of military service. Such refusals are becoming ever more and more frequent. The letter to a Hindu was written by me, 1 and the translation is a very good one. The title of the book about Krishna shall bo sent you from Moscow. 2 As to the word reincarnation, 3 I should not myself like to omit it, for, in my opinion, belief in reincarnation can never be as firm as belief in the soul's immortality and in God's justice and love. You may, however, do as you like about omitting it. The translation into, and circulation of my letter in the Hindoo language, can only be a pleasure for me. A competition, 4 i. e. an offer of a monetary inducement, in connection with a religious matter, would, I think, be out of place. If I can assist your publication, I shall be very glad. 5 I greet you fraternally,...

Часть текста: interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small clique, composed of persons utterly alien in thought and aspiration and altogether inferior to those whom they enslave. These causes, as one can easily see from your letter, from the articles in «Free Hindustan», from the highly interesting writings of the Hindoo Swami Vivekananda and others, are in accord with that which causes the distress of all the peoples of our time; in the absence of a rational religious teaching which, while elucidating the meaning of life to the people in an equal way, would also make clear the higher law, which should be a guide to conduct, and in the substitution for them of the more than dubious...

Часть текста: Jasnaya Poliana, Tula, Russia, March 31-st 1909. The fulfilment of Henry George’s teaching, i. e. the emancipation of the land from the right of property or, speaking more accurately, the emancipation of men from enlavery through the right of property of some over the land is in our time as urgently necessary, as was fifty years ago the emancipation of men in America and Russia from direct slavery. Unfortunately, as direct slave-owners endeavoured with all their power to retain direct slavery, which was advantageous for them, so also at the present time the wealthy classes use all their power for the retention of indirect slavery based upon landed property. In Russia, where people have never recognised landed property, this infamous action is particularly loathsome on the part of a stupid and coarse government which is endeavouring not only to retain the slaves in their servitude, but also by depraving the people to intensify their slavery in the future. I regard as stupid the action of our present government, because if it had put into practice Henry Georgeis principle that land cannot become exclusive property, — a principle always recognised and still recognised by the great mass of the Russian peasantry, — this measure alone, more effectually than all the acts of violence and cruelty now being accomplished by the government, would have pacified the people, and rendered impossible the codtinuation...
