I think you know that this is the denomination that they give in Russia to dissenters of a evangelistical creed. Last april the Stanovoi came in his house and took from him his three children. They did the same in three familys of Malakan. They came to me asking for help. I could not refuse them all what I could do and I wrote a letter to the Emperor relating in it this story and all what I know about the persecutions of the dissenters in Russia. I hope that the Emperor will not be offended by my letter. I tried to express my ideas as meekly as I could. You can read the letter, it is open. Compulsory governement organization is indeed nought else, than the semblance of good order, which is maintained by prisons, gallows, police, army and workhouses. Of real order there is none; only, that which infringes, it is hidden from our view in prisons, penal settlements and slums. And I think, that the dicease remains so long uncured, because it is concealed. So likewise with brotherhood or church communities. They also are semblances. There cannot be a community of saints among sinners. I think, that the members of a community in order to keep the semblance of sainthood must necessarily commit many new sins. We are so created, that we cannot become perfect either one by one, or in groups, but (from the very nature of the case) only all together. The warmth of any drop (or particle) is transmitted to all the others. And were it possible to conserve the heat of one particle, so that it should not pass to the others and therefore did not cool — it would only prove, that we took for heat, was not true heat. And I therefore think, that were our friends to direct towards their inner spiritual growth all the portion of attention and energy, which they devote to the sustainement of the outer form of a community amongst themselves — it would be better both for them and for God’s cause. Communities and external organisations seem to me to be lawful and useful only, when they are inevitable consequences of a corresponding inner state. Относительно же проявления красоты Баумгартен полагает, что высшее осуществление красоты мы познаём в природе, и потому подражание природе, по Баумгартену, есть высшая задача искусства (то же положение, прямо противоположное суждениям позднейших эстетиков). Пропуская мало замечательных последователей Баумгартена: Мейера, Эшенбурга, Эбергарта, которые только несколько изменяют взгляды учителя, отделяя приятное от красивого, выписываю определения красоты у явившихся тотчас же после Баумгартена писателей, совершенно иначе определяющих красоту. Писатели эти были Шюц, Зульцер, Мендельсон, Мориц. Писатели эти признают, в противоположность главному положению Баумгартена, целью искусства не красоту, а добро. Так, Зульцер (1720—1779) говорит, что прекрасным может быть признано только то, что содержит в себе добро. По Зульцеру,[86] цель всей жизни человечества есть благо общественной жизни. Достигается оно воспитанием нравственного чувства, и этой цели должно быть подчинено искусство. Красота есть то, что вызывает и воспитывает это чувство. Почти так же понимает красоту и Мендельсон (1729—1786). Искусство, по Мендельсону,[87] есть доведение прекрасного, познаваемого смутным чувством, до истинного и доброго. Цель же искусства есть нравственное совершенство. Для эстетиков этого направления идеал красоты есть прекрасная душа в прекрасном теле. I thank you for it, because I appreciate very much his work and I wish him to know it. Henry George has sent me all his books. I know some of them, but some others, as the «Perplexed Philosopher» and others, were new to me. The more I know of him, the more I esteem him and am astonished at the indifference of the civilized world to his work. If the new Tsar were to ask me, what I would advise him to do, I would say to him: use your autocratic power to abolish the land property in Russia and to introduce the single tax system; and then give up your power and the people a liberal constitution.
