Cher Monsieur, Ma réponse à votre première question: ce que pense le peuple russe de l’alliance franco-russe? est celle-ci: Le peuple russe, le vrai peuple n’a pas la moindre idée de l’existence de cette alliance. Si cependant cette alliance lui fut connue, je suis sûr que (tous les peuples lui étant également indifférents) son bon sens ainsi que son sentiment d’humanité lui montreraient que cette alliance exclusive avec un peuple plutôt qu’avec tout autre ne peut avoir d’autre but que de l’entraîner dans des inimités et peut être des guerres avec d’autres peuples et lui serait à cause de cela au plus haut point désagréable. A la question si le peuple, russe partage l’enthousiasme du peuple français? je crois pouvoir répondre que non seulement le peuple russe ne partage pas l’enthousiasme du peuple français (si cet enthousiasme existe en effet ce dont je doute fort), mais s’il savait tout ce qui se fait et se dit en France à propos de cette alliance, il éprouverait plutôt un sentiment de défiance et d’antipathie pour un peuple qui sans aucune raison se met tout à coup à professer pour lui un amour spontané et exception[n]el. Quant à la question: quelle est la portée de cette alliance pour la civilisalion en general, je crois être en droit de supposer que cette alliance ne pouvant avoir d’autre motif que la guerre ou la menace de la guerre dirigée contre d’autres peuples, son influence ne peut être que malfaisante. Часть текста: I read your letter twice and considered the matter as well as I could and could not arrive at a definite solution of the question. You may be right but I think not for every person which will read the book. It can have a bad influence over persons who will read not the whole book and not take in the sense of it. It might also have quite the opposite influence so as it was intented to. All what I can say in my defense is that when I read a book the chief interest for me is the Weltanschau[u]ng des Authors, what he likes and what he hates. And I hope that the reader, which will read my book with the same view will find out what the author likes or dislikes and will be influenced with the sentiment of the author. And I can say that when I wrote the book I abhorred with all my heart the lust and to express this abhorrence was one of the chief aims of the book. If I have failed in it I am very sorry and I am pleading guilty if I was so inconsiderate in the scene of which you write, that I could have produced such a bad impression on your mind. I think that we will be judged by our conscience and by God — not for the results of our deeds, which we can not know, but for our intentions. And I hope that my intentions were not bad. I could find fault with them only if I was convinced that they have neglected more important things than the use of animals. But as I don’t know it I can not judge them. A key which is nearly the real one is of no use.
