This is the war, that the Douchobortsy and all the true Christians are making against the Russian and all the military government. I hear that you have great heroes who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans). I got letters from Americans, who engage me to write about this noble work of their sailors and soldiers as they call it. 3 But I find that the work done by the American army and fleet was quite the opposite of noble and all these heroes are disgusting. I can imagine an old weak man full of superstitions, who thinks, that he can solve a dispute by boxing, but when I see a young a strong man who by his culture and the ideas of his time ought be know better accept the challenge of the old man and beat this silly old man and be proud of it, I am quite disgusted. And this is the aspect of the American war. I dont speak of the motives of the war, or better say the pretext, because there can not be true motives for a war, for killing people with the purpose of making people happy. Даже создание такой, казалось бы, сравнительно малозначащей толстовской инсценировки житийного «чтения», как «Петр Хлебник», не обошлось без противопоставления английскому драматургу. Так, 28 января 1884 г. Толстой «читал Шекспира «Кориолана»... несомненную чепуху, которая может нравиться только актерам»; 29-го — «утром прочел «Макбета» с большим вниманием, — балаганную пьесу, писанную умным и памятливым актером, который начитался умных книг». А уже 30-го числа Толстой, как бы в противовес «аристократическим» шекспировским трагедиям, просматривает фольклорные памятники для «затеянной народной пьесы », которую он «обдумывает с большим удовольствием» и которая «все разрастается», т. е. для «Петра Хлебника» 2 . Правда, Толстой обосновал свой отрицательный взгляд на творчество Шекспира позднее — в 1903 г., принявшись за критический очерк «О Шекспире и о драме». К этому времени длинный ряд пьес и сценических замыслов Толстого был уже частью осуществлен, частью оставлен взыскательным художником в архиве: ранние драматические наброски 50—60-х годов, «Зараженное семейство» (1864), «Нигилист» (1866), «Петр Хлебник» (1884), «Аггей» (1886), «Первый винокур» (1886), «Власть тьмы» (1886), «Плоды просвещения» (1889), «Живой труп» (1900), «И свет во тьме светит» (1900—1902). Оставалась еще не написанной лишь одна небольшая пьеса — «От ней все качества» (1910). Однако, в названном критическом очерке был подведен уже итог всем предшествовавшим раздумиям Толстого над шекспировскими текстами, неизменно сопровождавшим его...

If Christ could make all men healthy and rich (if he could make wine out of water, he could make all men rich) he should have done it instead of teaching men how to be blessed without health and riches. Those who accept the miracles, accept them only because they do not want to accept the teaching. 2) The divinity of Christ? The chief meaning of the definition of God is that He is a being different from man, above him and therefore if I say that man is God, I say a contradiction, just as if I said: spirit (the definition of which is something that is not matter) — spirit is matter. Christ being God is a belief that can be kept only by people who do not want to accept his teaching.
