1910 Dear Sir, I am much obliged to you for your encouraging and cordial letter of the 8-th May last. I very much value your general approval of my booklet «Indian Home Rule». And, if you have the time, I shall look forward to your detailed criticism of the work which you have been so good as to promise in your letter. Mr. Kallenbach has written to you about Tolstoy Farm. Mr. Kallenbach and I have been friends for many years. I may state that he has gone through most of the experiences that you have so graphically described in your work «My Confession». No writings have so deeply touched Mr. Kallenbach as yours, and, as a spur to further effort in living up to the ideals held before the world by you, he has taken the liberty, after consultation with me, of naming his farm after you. Of his generous action in giving the use of the farm for passive resisters, the numbers of «Indian Opinion» I am sending herewith will give you full information. I should not have burdened you with these details but for the fact of your tocing a personal interest in the passive resistance struggle that is going on in the Transvaal. I remain your faithful servant M. K. Gandhi Count Leo Tolstoy Yasnaya Polyana

Я. П . Dear Friend, You were right in guessing that I must be interested in the Tolstoy Society. So I was. But I am sorry that I have enough vanity left to be interested in it. I have always held the opinion and it cannot change — that to be a member of the old Society that was started by God at the beginning of conscious humanity, is more profitable for oneself and for mankind than to be a member of limited societies which we organise for the sake of attaining the end which we are able to conceive. I think the preference we give to our own Societies is due to the fact that the part we play in our own Societies seems to us to be of much greater importance than the one we play in God’s great Society. But this is only an illusion; all the three modes of activity which you mention in your letter will be more surely attained by a man who regards himself a member of God’s great Society, than by a member of Tolstoy’s Society. Such a man who is earnest, as I know you are, will, firstly spread as much as he can the ideas that give him peace of conscience and energy in life without minding whether they are Tolstoy’s or anybody else’s. He will secondly try with all his might to induce people to speak their mind on the most important questions of life. He will, thirdly, try to give every person he comes in contact with, as much joy and happiness as it in his power to do and will also help those who get into difficulties through strictly following the teaching of Christ. A man belonging to God’s great Society, will beside that perform many other useful Christian acts which have neither been foreseen nor formulated by Tolstoy’s or any other Society. I own there are some advantages in the union of persons of the same mind who form Societies; but, I think, the drawbacks of such organisations are much greater that their advantages, And so I...

Часть текста: your great teachers. The more place you shall give in your magazine to the idea of those men, the more interesting it will be for the western readers. Thanking you for your magazine and letter, I remain, dear Sir, yours truly, Leo Tolstoy. 17/30 May 1907. Toula, Russia. Обе статьи «Ourselves» и «The Basis of Life» вполне ей соответствуют. Dear Sir, I have not yet received the cuttings of your articles, in which I am very much interested, as in all, what you write. I feel in you a kindred spirit and it is a joy for me to be in communication with you. I read with great interest your «Anatomy of misery», 1 and before I got it from you, I got a copy of it through a bookseller and had it translated in Russian. I thank you heartily for sending it to me. I received it in time. My book, the translation of the gospels, 2 is now being translated by a gentleman in Petersbourg — prof. Turner (Petersbourg university). If your publischer will write to him, he will know all about it. With high regards yours truly Leo Tolstoy. Dear Sir, I received your new book 1 and have read part of it with great interest. I think it would be good to translate it in Russian, and I will try to do it if you have nothing against it. I am quite ignorant about J. Thomas 2 and his work and would be very glad to know it. I would rather not abuse of your kindness and will ask my friends to send me those books. I am very glad to know that you are interested in religious matter. It forms a new link between you and me. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 13 July 1904. Dear sir, I thank you for the Review of Religions. 1 I am very interested in your work. Do you know the doctrine of Baha Ullah 2 and what do you think of it? Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 2 February 1904. Часть текста: great pleasure. The first number is very good and I liked all the articles in it. It is quite true, as you say it in your article «The Social Need » 1 , and Herron 2 in his, that a Christian life is quite impossible in the present unchristian organization of society. The contradictions between his surroundings and his convictions are very painful for a man who is sincere in his сhristian faith, and therefore the organization of communities seems to such a man the only means of delivering himself from these contradictions. But this is an illusion. Every community is a small island in the mist of an ocean of unchristian conditions of life, so that the christian relations exist only between members of the colony but outside that must remain unchristian, otherwise the colony would not exist for a moment. And therefore to live in community cannot save a christian from the contradiction between his conscience and his life. I do not mean to say that I do not approve of communities such as your commonwealth, or that I do not think them to be a good thing. On the contrary, I approve of them with all my heart and am very interested in your commonwealth and wish it the greatest success. I think that every man who can free himself from the conditions of wordly life without breaking the ties of love — love the main principle in the name of which he seeks new forms of life — I think such a man not only must, but naturally join people who have the same beliefs and who try to live up to them. If I were free I would immediately even at my age join such a colony. I only wished to say that the mere forming of communities is not a solution for the christian problem, but is only one of the means of its solution. The revolution that is going on for the attainment of the christian ideal is so enormous, our life is so different ...

Часть текста: expand is Truth. Falsehood, and especially falsehood against oneself, hinders Love to manifest itself and to expand. Therefore truth is so necessary and is the first of our duties; therefore also all the so often hypocritically used admonitions to love one’s neighbour are false and vain. Love is God and God is infinite, and man cannot augment God. All what a man can and must do, is to put aside all hindrances for the manifestation of God, i. e. Love, which is in him. And there is only one thing, that hinders this manifestation: that is falsehood. And not to think and to speak lies, when a man knows, that what he thinks and what he says is not true, is in the power of man. Therefore the first duty of man, who wishes to live a real life, is to be truthful in thoughts, words and deeds. And to this every man can tend and attain this «but». To be truthful in reference to your article, I must say, that I expected it stronger and shorter, especially the first part. You can write much better. You notice, that I always criticize your writings, it is because I love and esteem you and feel myself obliged to be so strict and severe in my judgements of you, as I try to be on myself. I hope, that notwithstanding my bad English and my faults you will understand, what I wished to say. My article on Vanderveer has been published in French Journal des Débats, I hope, that that shall not be an obstacle for the English publication. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 1896. 10 Nov.

Часть текста: of that, which should be. Compulsory governement organization is indeed nought else, than the semblance of good order, which is maintained by prisons, gallows, police, army and workhouses. Of real order there is none; only, that which infringes, it is hidden from our view in prisons, penal settlements and slums. And I think, that the dicease remains so long uncured, because it is concealed. So likewise with brotherhood or church communities. They also are semblances. There cannot be a community of saints among sinners. I think, that the members of a community in order to keep the semblance of sainthood must necessarily commit many new sins. We are so created, that we cannot become perfect either one by one, or in groups, but (from the very nature of the case) only all together. The warmth of any drop (or particle) is transmitted to all the others. And were it possible to conserve the heat of one particle, so that it should not pass to the others and therefore did not cool — it would only prove, that we took for heat, was not true heat. And I therefore think, that were our friends to direct...
