Dear Sir, I am sorry to hear that you are [a] soldier. The business and duty of a soldier is to prepare to kill other men. Killing not only men, but animals is very bad. Everybody must try to look at every man as a brother and to love him, and not prepare to kill his brother. I am sending to you one of my books. I hope and wish that you will like it. 2/IV —15/IV 1910. Милостивый Государь, Мне грустно слышать, что вы солдат. Ремесло и обязанность солдата — быть готовым убивать других людей. Убийство же не только людей, но и животных очень дурно. Всякий должен стремиться смотреть на каждого человека как на брата и любить его, а не готовиться убивать своего брата. Часть текста: this infamous action is particularly loathsome on the part of a stupid and coarse government which is endeavouring not only to retain the slaves in their servitude, but also by depraving the people to intensify their slavery in the future. I regard as stupid the action of our present government, because if it had put into practice Henry Georgeis principle that land cannot become exclusive property, — a principle always recognised and still recognised by the great mass of the Russian peasantry, — this measure alone, more effectually than all the acts of violence and cruelty now being accomplished by the government, would have pacified the people, and rendered impossible the codtinuation of the revolution. Whereas the Russian government has had recourse to a measure pricisely contrary to such an one by encouraging in every way the transference of the land from communal ownership to private individual ownership. 1 In this I see the government's astounding stupidity. Whilst in those measures which the government applies for the repression of the dissafection amongst the people naturally flowing from their want in land, is manifested the government’s astounding cruelty. Therefore the activity of the Single-Tax League organised in England is especially gladdening. Henry George is especially to be appreciated by those who profess Christianity in its true sense, for not only are the foundations of his teaching, but also his methods truly Christian. As Jesus in his utterance, «Ye have heard that it was said: Thou shalt not kill,... but I say unto you, Resist not evil», has pointed out that the commandment, «Thou shalt not kill», never, absolutely in no case, can be broken, that neither may the pretext ...

И это неизбежно двойственное отношение его ко Л. Н-чу и привело его к увольнению от должности тульского губернатора и к переводу его в другую губернию. Лев Николаевич был занят окончательной отделкой "Плодов просвещения". В апреле комедия была поставлена в Царском Селе, в Китайском театре в присутствии государя, и имела большой успех. Она была напечатана в сборнике "В память Юрьева". В самом Л. My dear friend, I am very thankful to you and your friends for the remembrance of my birthday. 1 I would very much like to use this opportunity to present to you and your friends more vividly the significance of the case of the Douchobortsy. I have just written a letter article entitled: «The two wars», which I have no time to translate but the contents of which I would like to communicate to you. 2 I say, that in our time there were two wars going on: one the Spanish American war, which is finished, and the other war against war which is still going on and which will finish only with all the wars in the world. This is the war, that the Douchobortsy and all the true Christians are making against the Russian and all the military government. I hear that you have great heroes who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans).
