Часть текста: interest and profit for my spiritual life all the Braminic religious books which I have come across and will be very thankfull for the book you propose to send me. I was sorry to see that you think I do not agree with the fundamental principle of the Bhagavad-Gita 1 that man should direct all his spiritual force only to his duty, or as I express it-to his life, to love and not think of the consequences, knowing that if he lives on this principle the results for himself and for the world will be the best possible. I firmly believe this and always try to remember it and to act accordingly myself, and say it to those who ask my opinion and express it in my writings. If my conception of life is truly religious I cannot think otherwise, for this principle is the foundation of religion. And religion, true religion is and always has been one and the same ewerywhere. Thank you for the good feelings you express for me in your letter and allowing myself to reproach you for exagerating my importance, I remain your friend and brother 2 Leo Tolstoy. My friend V. Tchertkoff will send to you all my writings translated into English which can be of interest to you. L. T. 3 Febr. 1908.

Часть текста: regard Christ as an impostor as one of your co-religionists wrote to me some time ago 1 and do not lay at his door all the bad things that are included in the Gospel. All that I read in your books is quite congenial to me and especially your sermon on «The Philosophy of Human life». I am very sorry not to be able to send you my complete answer to the «Excommunication», but I wrote to my friend in England — V. Tchertkoff (Christchurch, Hants) begging him to send to you this answer and also some of my books on religious subjects by which you will see that without knowing each other personally we come to the same conclusions because we draw from the same source: human reason, love and conscience, as you rightly put in some of your books. With respect and love Yours truly Leo Tolstoy.

Your arguments for perfect truthfulness always are very strong and seem to me indisputable, but I missed in your article the exposition of the relation between Truth and Love and a more profound definition of Truth than of B. Johnson. I think that Love is God, is life itself, is that, what is godly in man, and that Love, which is God and therefore infinite, being enclosed in man, tends to expand itself, and that is the motion of life, which we feel in ourselves, and that the unique means for Love to manifest itself and to expand is Truth. Falsehood, and especially falsehood against oneself, hinders Love to manifest itself and to expand. Therefore truth is so necessary and is the first of our duties; therefore also all the so often hypocritically used admonitions to love one’s neighbour are false and vain. Love is God and God is infinite, and man cannot augment God. All what a man can and must do, is to put aside all hindrances for the manifestation of God, i. e. Love, which is in him. And there is only one thing, that hinders this manifestation: that is falsehood. And not to think and to speak lies, when a man knows, that what he thinks and what he says is not true, is in the power of man. Therefore the first duty of man, who wishes to live a real life, is to be truthful in thoughts, words and deeds. And to this every man can tend and attain this «but». To be truthful in reference to your article, I must say, that I expected it stronger and shorter, especially the first part. You can write much...

Часть текста: give you a satisfactory answer to your letter. The reason of it is, that I very much doubt my being an author of such importance as to interest by the incidents of my life not only the Russian, but also the European public. I am fully convinced by many examples of writers, of whom their contemporaries made very much of and which were quite forgotten in their lifetime, that for contemporaries it is impossible to judge rightly on the merits of literary works, and therefore, notwithstanding my wishes, I cannot partake the temporary illusion of some friends of mine, which seem to be sure, that my works must occupy some place in the Russian literature. Quite sincerely not knowing, if my works shall be read after hundred years, or will be forgotten in a hundred days, I do not wish to take a ridiculous part in the very probable mistake of my friends. Hoping, that on consideration of my motives you will kindly excuse my refusal, I am Yours faithfully C. L. Tolstoy. London. M-r Ralston. Exquire. 8 Alfred Place. Я. П. Dear Sir, I have received your letter and the Labour Annual. Thank you for sending it. I have looked it over and have found in it many things, that are new to me. I think, that such a book is very useful, because it makes known to each other people working the same work and not knowing their comrades. I think, that the title of your publication is too narrow. The contents are broader. It contains not only records of the labour movement, but of the whole social reformation movement, which is going on now with so great intensity in the whole world. The solution of the labour question will not solve the social question, but the social question includes the labour question. And the social question can be solved only by the annulment of every kind of restraint used by one man or reunion of men over any other man or men. And this can only be done by change of public opinion. The social question will be solved only when it will be regarded...

Часть текста: and be quite open with you, not fearing to hurt you by what I have to say. The metaphysical religious idea of the doctrine of Krishna, so well exposed in your book, is the eternal and universal foundation of all true philosophies and all religions. The truth that the principle of all that exists we cannot otherwise feel and understand than as Love and that the soul of man is an emanation of this principle, the development of which is what we call human life — is a truth that is more or less consciously felt by every man and therefore accessible to the most scientifically developed minds as well as to the most simple. This truth is the foundation of the religion of Krishna and of all religions. But in the religion of Krishna, as well as in all ancient religions, there are statements which not only cannot be proved, but which are clearly products of uncontrolled imagination and which, moreover, are quite unnecessary for the conception of the essential truth and the affirmation of rules of conduct which flow out of the fundamental principle. Such are all the cosmological and historical affirmations of creations, durability of the world, all the stories of miracles, the theory of the four ages and the immoral and contradictory to the fundamental principle organization of casts. Dear friend and brother, the task which is before you is to state the truth common to all men, which can and must unify the whole humanity in one and the same faith, and one and the same rule of conduct based on it. Humanity must unite in one and the same faith, because the soul of every man — as you know it — only seems to be multiple and different in every individual, but is one in all beings. And therefore, dear brother,...

Н. - Кенворти Джону (John С. Kenworthy), 30 декабря1901 г. Джону Кенворти (John Kenworthy). 1901 г. Koreis. Crimea. Dear friend, I thank you heartily for sending me your writings 1 and especially for your kind letter. I can say quite sincerely that I never forgot and never will the gladness that I felt in knowing you and your work and the joy that I got from my communion with you. 2 I can not help saying that I am sorry for the importance that you attach to spiritism. Your true and pure Christian faith and life are much more reliable than all that the spirits can say to you. Your true friend Leo Tolstoy. 1 Jan./30 dec. 1902.
