Он никак не ожидал, что это будет так скоро, так как рождение его было предсказано по крайне мере две недели позднее, чем оно случилось. Назвали его Николаем. Мы с Натой Философовой предсказывали, что он будет худенький, черненький и болезненный, но пока все выходит наоборот: он толстенький, белокурый и здоровый. На другой день после моего приезда домой от Ильи приехала Маша Кузминская и, к нашему общему изумлению и неодобрению, с ней приехал Эрдели. Они так влюблены, что оба в состоянии совершенной невменяемости, но так милы, что нельзя им не сочувствовать. Он очень хороший и честный мальчик, и у нас все очень полюбили его. На первый день Рождества была у нас елка. На второй - ряженые - вся дворня и прислуга. Это очень удалось, все много плясали и веселились 2 . Были у нас Зиновьевы и Джулиани и играли и пели очень хорошо, но в этот раз Джулиани не особенно меня взволновала и растревожила, чего я очень боялась. Лева тут живет очень тихо, общается с нами, девочками, и это, по-моему, ему впрок. Сережа побыл тут, а к новому году поехал к Олсуфьевым. Сперва я решила ехать с ним, но потом раздумала. Во-первых, мне просто не хотелось. Я так радостно спокойна и весела теперь, что мне не хотелось портить этого настроения. А если бы я туда поехала, то опять начала бы мучиться, спрашивать себя, как кто там ко мне относится, следить за каждой фразой, сказанной мне, и думать о том, какой бы мне надо было быть, чтобы быть любимой. А теперь я начинаю отвыкать от этих мыслей, и мне очень не хочется их опять возбуждать. But in this we are mistaken. We think that our Christian life will begin when wе will be free from our wordly ties, but it begins when we are trying to undo those ties, and this undoing them in a Christian fashion without acting contrary to the principle in the name of which wo are chan ging our life, i. e. the love and the absence of violence is the main thing for a Christian. So that I think that a Christian, — and you in your case — must not try to show to others what true life is, but to make in his soul the internal change, which will bring you not in the position, that you imagine yourself you must occupy, but which will be the necessary result of your internal change. When the seventy came back to Christ and said to him, that the devils obeyed them, he answered: don’t be glad of your power over the devils, but try that your names should be written in Heaven. By many signs of the times I think that «verily, verily I say unto you the hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God». I think so because not only in you but in many people of different culture I see this awakening consciousness that we are deceived, that the organization of our life is a mockery of the teaching of Christ which we profess. That this life is miserable and sinful, and that it could he blissful and holy. And that for to attain this end we have only to shake off the ancient imposture in which we now live. All the great teachers of humanity have at all time preached the brotherhood of men, but it is Christianity alone, which points out the way, whereby this can be attained. You have translated my works, such as «the Kreuzer Sonata» etc., but I very much wish to make the Japanese public familiar with true Christianity, as I think its founder conceived it. This, as far as I could, I expounded in my book: «The kingdom of god is within you». I think, these books or, at least, an exposition of their contents might be of interest to the Japanese people and might show them, that Christianity is not a collection of miracle narratives, but a very srtict exposition of that idea of human life, which gives wise neither to despair, nor to indifference about ones conduct, but which leads to a most definite moral activity. I advised your friends to order from Geneva those books, which you would like to have. But if you wish it, I will myself send you for translation the book, on which I am now engaged. As far, as I have been able to make it, it contains the most condensed and precise exposition of the Christian teaching. I gave Toku-Tomi some articles 3 to be sent to you. But I think, that these assemblies ought not to be devoted, as they usually are, to public and uniform public prayers, firstly, because the repetition on Sunday in the same words is perfectly useless, as it very soon becomes a mechanical procedure; secondly and chiefly, because in the Gospels this error is plainly pointed out and it is there definitely said (Math. VI), that one should not pray in public places, but in solitude, which is corroborated both by the reason and the experience of every man, who has ever sincerely prayed to God, as the assembly of people only distracts, makes one’s thoughts wander and diverts them. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms.
