Exposition of the teaching of the Veddas by Vivekananda.   I Do not seek rest in that plane where the earthly gives birth to thoughts and desires, for if thou dost, thou wilt be dragged through the rough wilderness of life, which is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes...

«То my mind unless we conceive God as engaged in a continual struggle to surpass himself, — as striving at every birth to make a better man than before, we are conceiving nothing better, than an omnipotent snob». 1 Об остальном же вашем рассуждении о боге и о зле повторяю слова, которые я высказал, как вы пишете, о вашем «Man and Superman», 2 а именно, что вопросы о боге, о зле и добре слишком важны для того, чтобы говорить о них шутя. И потому откровенно скажу вам, что заключительные слова вашего письма произвели на меня очень тяжелое впечатление: «suppose the world were only one of God’s jokes, would you work any the less to make it a good joke instead of a bad one» — «предположите, что мир есть только одна из божьих шуток. Bernard Shaw. 9 May 1910 Jasnaya Poliana. Toula. Russia. My dear Mr. Bernard Shaw, I have received your play and your witty letter. I have read your play with pleasure. I am in full sympathy with its subject. Your remark that the preaching of righteousness has generally little influence on people and that young men regard as laudable that which is contrary righteousness is quite correct. It does not however follow that such preaching is unnecessary. The reason of the failure is that...

Часть текста: name and be in direct intercourse with you. Have you many subscribers to your magazine? I wish the greatest success to your work, so very necessary in our time. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. P. S. Reading your very good note to the word «anarchism» I remembered on the same matter the saying of Lao-Tze; he says: when great sages have power over the people, the people do not notice them, if the power is in the hands of sages (not great ones), the people like them and praise them: if those who govern are less sage the people are afraid of them and where those who govern are still less sage, the people despise them. L. Tolstoy.

Часть текста: our budget, — as the want of fire wood has been greater than we expected it. Therefore every gift from American benefactors for our famine stricken peasants will be gratefully accepted.

Часть текста: difficult, becouse all are very good — I will have translated in Russian and publisch. There is nothing more new and interesting as the most common subjects looked at from a Christian point of view. And that is what you are doing in your book and doing with talent and sincerity. I will very much like to see M-r Herron 3 but I am affraid that his ideas shall not be partaken by me. I think that Christian principles can have real influence only when they are thorough. Christianity can not bear halfmeasures. There is only the key for the lock that opens it. A key which is nearly the real one is of no use. If we can not be thorough in our lifes, deads [?]let us try to be as thorough as possible in our idead, because to be thorough in ones ideas there is no hindrance. I like very much the Christian[?] gospel 4 and it is a great joy for me to know that I have so many true friends and brothers among your countrymen. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: glad to avail myself of the opportunity of answering your questions sensibly. 1) Do I accept the miraculous element in the gospel narratives? I think that to accept or to believe the miracles of the gospel is a complete impossibility for a sane person in our times. We cannot believe the miracles not because we wish, or we do not wish to believe in them, but because such narratives, having a certain meaning for people of the 4-th century, have none for us. If Christ in body ascended the sky, he is ascending it still and never will reach the seat at the right hand of his father. And the same stands for all the miracles of the gospel. I think that the faith in the miracle excludes the faith in the teaching. If Christ could make all men healthy and rich (if he could make wine out of water, he could make all men rich) he should have done it instead of teaching men how to be blessed without health and riches. Those who accept the miracles, accept them only because they do not want to accept the...

Я. П. 3/16 Febr. 1907. Toula, Jasnaja Poliana. Dear Brother, It gives me joy to address you thus because I keenly feel my brotherhood to a man who, although physically so very far, is spiritually so very near to me. I have just finished to read your book «Krishna» and am under a very strong impression of it. I knew the teaching of Krishna before, but never had such a clear insight of it as I got from both parts of your book. Knowing you by your book I will reject all wordly considerations and be quite open with you, not fearing to hurt you by what I have to say. The metaphysical religious idea of the doctrine of Krishna, so well exposed in your book, is the eternal and universal foundation of all true philosophies and all religions. The truth that the principle of all that exists we cannot otherwise feel and understand than as Love and that the soul of man is an emanation of this principle, the development of which is what we call human life — is a truth that is more or less consciously felt by every man and therefore accessible to the most scientifically developed minds as well as to the most simple. This truth is...

Часть текста: of socialism and am sorry to know that the most spiritually advanced part of your, so clever and energetic people, has taken from Europe the very feeble, illusory and fallacious theory of socialism, which in Europe is beginning to be abandoned. Socialism has for its aim the satisfaction of the meanest part of human nature: his material wellbeing and by the means it proposes can never attain them. The true wellbeing of humanity is spiritual i. e. moral and includes the material wellbeing. And this higher goal can be attained only by religious i. e. moral perfection of all the unites which compose nations and humanity. By religion I understand the reasonable belief in a (general for all humanity) law of God which practically is exposed in the precept of loving every man and doing to everybody what one wishes to be done to you. I know that this method seemes to be less expedient than socialism and other frail theories, but it is the sole true one. And all the efforts we use in trying to realize false and not reaching ...
