And I think, that the dicease remains so long uncured, because it is concealed. So likewise with brotherhood or church communities. They also are semblances. There cannot be a community of saints among sinners. I think, that the members of a community in order to keep the semblance of sainthood must necessarily commit many new sins. We are so created, that we cannot become perfect either one by one, or in groups, but (from the very nature of the case) only all together. The warmth of any drop (or particle) is transmitted to all the others. And were it possible to conserve the heat of one particle, so that it should not pass to the others and therefore did not cool — it would only prove, that we took for heat, was not true heat. And I therefore think, that were our friends to direct towards their inner spiritual growth all the portion of attention and energy, which they devote to the sustainement of the outer form of a community amongst themselves — it would be better both for them and for God’s cause. Communities and external organisations seem to me to be lawful and useful only, when they are inevitable consequences of a corresponding inner state. For instance, if two men, from a calculation, that it is more profitable to live in one house and eat one dinner, were to say to each other: «let us live in one house and eat one dinner», there would be very little chance, that they would stay and live together without subjecting themselves to many disadvantages and much disagreableness, which would outweigh the expected advantages and pleasure; but if two men who often met, came to love each other and also became utterly indifferent to the accomodation, they have, and the dinner, they eat, and were to say to each other: «why should we live separately, since we do not care about our accomodation and our dinner, and would...

Часть текста: of which would deliver men from their miseries and give them the greatest welfare; but, strange though it seems to say so nothing has so much hindered the spreading of the truth, as the too hasty desire to make others accept it. I have always been deeply affected by the seldom noticed words of Christ to his 70 disciples, when they returned from preaching and boasted of their success, saying that everywhere the devils were subject unto them: «In this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather, because your names are written in heaven». In other words: seek not exterior success visible to all men, do not count your proselytes, as do the churchmen & the salvation army, 1 but seek to be in the truth, never to deviate from it & success, thoough perhaps invisible to you, will follow, will certainly follow, because when a man is in the truth he will act and his action will inevitably have the most fruitful results, if even they will not be visible to him. The same is expressed in the words «Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness & all these things shall be added unto you»; & in the words: «Be ye wise as serpents, & harmless as doves». Truth in order to influence men should be complete, not clipped, not adapted to the life of men of the world. And this is always being forgotten by mankind. And owing to this the most powerful efforts have been and are yet lost in vain. Precious is not that community which we may organize at Toula or Croydon 3 with the help of those near to us in time and space, although such a community may also have its object & signification, but precious is that community of men of all times and nations, who unite in the one truth, in which I have been brought into communion with men, so distant from me in space & time, & amongst others with you. The community, which is now necessary for mankind, will be composed not...

Часть текста: the key for the lock that opens it. A key which is nearly the real one is of no use. If we can not be thorough in our lifes, deads [?]let us try to be as thorough as possible in our idead, because to be thorough in ones ideas there is no hindrance. I like very much the Christian[?] gospel 4 and it is a great joy for me to know that I have so many true friends and brothers among your countrymen. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: December 1906 4 Jan. 1907 То the odd man of the Crank. Dear sir, I thank you very much for the Crank Magazine, which I enjoy very much. To-day I have read the last article of Worland: 1 «The earth for all», 2 it is very good, especially his criticism of Malthus’s theory, 3 which notwithstanding its weakness has had such a large spreading. I think that true Christianity with its ideal of chastity is the best remedy of the imaginary future excess of the population. I will take care that it should be translated in russian, if he will allow it. I liked it very much, also your answer to Schaw, 4 as I like all the pages signed by «Odd Man». I would be very glad to know your name and be in direct intercourse with you. Have you many subscribers to your magazine? I wish the greatest success to your work, so very necessary in our time. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. P. S. Reading your very good note to the word «anarchism» I remembered on the same matter the saying of Lao-Tze; he says: when great sages have power over the people, the people do not notice them, if the power is in the hands of sages (not great ones), the people like them and praise them: if those who govern are less sage the people are afraid of them and where those who govern are still less sage, the people despise them. L. Tolstoy.

I would like very much [to] be able to write a book about education but I am sure I will not have time for it. Thank you for your letter; please do not cease to inform me from time to time of your work and yourself. Your friend Leo Tolstoy. 1903. 3 April. Часть текста: position — it may be of an emperor, of a hangman, a president, a spy, a priest, a soldier, a judge — act in the position in which the christian enlightenment found him, as his conscience bids him, and the result will be just what it ought to be: he will be chassed from the position that he ocupied and that may be the best thing for him. That is what I think about the difficulty Mr. Jones is in. It is great joy for me to know that there are men like Mr. Jones professing the christian doctrine not only in words but in deeds. Give him please my respect and love. What a pitiful state of jingoistic hypnotization is your people in now. It is dreadful but gives me nothing unexpected and new. This terrible evil and superstition which is called a virtue and which is unhappily so strong in America — patriotism could not produce anything else. They do not gather grapes from thornes... And so patriotism produces only lies, violence, murder. The sole sorrow of my old age is that I have not succeded to communicate to my brothers the truth which I feel with the same evidence as I feel the light of the sun. That patriotism must lead to lies, violence, murder and the loss not only of material wellbeing but of the greatest moral depravation. I am not yet discouraged and am now writing again on the same subject an article entitled «Carthago delenda est»; I will speak and write on this theme till my last breath because I think patriotism is one of the ...

Часть текста: who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans). I got letters from Americans, who engage me to write about this noble work of their sailors and soldiers as they call it. 3 But I find that the work done by the American army and fleet was quite the opposite of noble and all these heroes are disgusting. I can imagine an old weak man full of superstitions, who thinks, that he can solve a dispute by boxing, but when I see a young a strong man who by his culture and the ideas of his time ought be know better accept the challenge of the old man and beat this silly old man and be proud of it, I am quite disgusted. And this is the aspect of the American war. I dont speak of the motives of the war, or better say the pretext, because there can not be true motives for a war, for killing people with the purpose of making people happy. So I dont speak of the pretext, but of the war itself. And in this hideous war they glorifie heroes and the whole world is silly enough to listen to all this cruel nonsense instead of faire honte à ceux qui proclament toutes ces horreurs comme des hautefaits. And in the meantime ther are in an other war which is going on in the whole world real true heroes who being martyrised, alone without witnesses, who could support them in wildernesses of central Asia and Siberia hold to their conviction and cover with shame their tyrants, and spread the truth and destroy the organisation of war. And nobody knows those heroes and take interst in them. But I think that not only Christians but truly civilized persons ought to despise all those hideous pagan heroes which are very proud to have killed many brothers and to have make retrograde the human conscience and to be in spiritual union with those other true heroes who perish alone not for the opinion of men but for God and humanity and help them as ...

The title of the book about Krishna shall bo sent you from Moscow. 2 As to the word reincarnation, 3 I should not myself like to omit it, for, in my opinion, belief in reincarnation can never be as firm as belief in the soul's immortality and in God's justice and love. You may, however, do as you like about omitting it. The translation into, and circulation of my letter in the Hindoo language, can only be a pleasure for me. A competition, 4 i. e. an offer of a monetary inducement, in connection with a religious matter, would, I think, be out of place. If I can assist your publication, I shall be very glad. 5 I greet you fraternally, and am glad to have intercourse with you. 1909.]
