Часть текста: for the sake of attaining the end which we are able to conceive. I think the preference we give to our own Societies is due to the fact that the part we play in our own Societies seems to us to be of much greater importance than the one we play in God’s great Society. But this is only an illusion; all the three modes of activity which you mention in your letter will be more surely attained by a man who regards himself a member of God’s great Society, than by a member of Tolstoy’s Society. Such a man who is earnest, as I know you are, will, firstly spread as much as he can the ideas that give him peace of conscience and energy in life without minding whether they are Tolstoy’s or anybody else’s. He will secondly try with all his might to induce people to speak their mind on the most important questions of life. He will, thirdly, try to give every person he comes in contact with, as much joy and happiness as it in his power to do and will also help those who get into difficulties through strictly following the teaching of Christ. A man belonging to God’s great Society, will beside that perform many other useful Christian acts which have neither been foreseen nor formulated by Tolstoy’s or any other Society. I own there are some advantages in the union of persons of the same mind who form Societies; but, I think, the drawbacks of such organisations are much greater that their advantages, And so I think, for myself, that it would be a great loss to me to change my membership of God’s great Society for the most seemingly useful participation in any human Society. I am very sorry, dear friend, to differ from your opinion, but I cannot think otherwise. Your friend Leo Tolstoy.

Я. П. Dear friend and brother, The condition of the « Spirit Wrestlers» especially of those which have received the permission to emigrate is very bad. The government augments its pressure upon them. The governor of the Caucasus Golitzine has told them that if they remain true to their faith they will be kept in the same position i. e. be starved to death, and that if they give in, they will be restorted to their former welfare. Many, — nearly 200 of them could not hold out and did recant from their faith, saying that they know it si wrong but they could not longer wittness the sufferings of their families. But those which remain true are in a desperate condition. They are nearly 3000, but they have in all no more than 70 000 roubles, which is not half enough for their emigration, especially because they must pay 10 r. per head for their passeports. Our friend from the christian Commonwealth has sent to me a proposition to settle them in Texas. 1 I forwarded this letter to the English Committee for the emigration of the Douchoborys, and this proposition pleased very much to the Douchoborys themselves. Now what I ask of you is that you should inform us i. e. the commitee in England (adress Kenworthy or Tchertkoff), how much acres could they have in Texas at what price; 2) that you should inform us also at what price the ships could take the men for the passage and 3) to rise in America a subscription for an emigration fund for the Duochoborys. — I have collected till now about 5000. They defend to publish about it in Russia. 2 But I will nevertheless try to collect more by personal [appeals] to persons who can and will help. If you will be so good to do what I ask you, please write about it to me and to Tchertkoff. I admired very much your declaration about the war. 3 Please excuse the negligence of my letter. I have been very ill for a...

Часть текста: you once more for your book and also for the mention in it of my name, I remain, with high regard and sympathy, Yours truly, Leo Tolstoy. 1900. 12 August. Часть текста: yours was written. I did not quite understand through your letter, nor through your book — your conception of life, and would be very thankful if you would explain to me your religious views. I am very much interested in the religious beliefs of the Japanese. I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man, what is the meaning of the life that he is obliged to live. You ...

(I do not like those names; they promise too much: it would be well, if in the transformation they would drop this name). 1 I think, that a great part of the evil of the world is due to our wishing to see the realization of what we are striving at, but are not ready for, and therefore being satisfied with the semblance of that, which should be. Compulsory governement organization is indeed nought else, than the semblance of good order, which is maintained by prisons, gallows, police, army and workhouses. Of real order there is none; only, that which infringes, it is hidden from our view in prisons, penal settlements and slums. And I think, that the dicease remains so long uncured, because it is concealed. So likewise with brotherhood or church communities. They also are semblances. There cannot be a community of saints among sinners. I think, that the members of a community in order to keep the semblance of sainthood must necessarily commit many new sins. We are so created, that we cannot become perfect either one by one, or in groups, but (from the very nature of the case) only all together. The warmth of any drop (or particle) is transmitted to all the others. And were it possible to conserve the heat of one particle, so that it should not pass to the others and therefore did not cool — it would only prove, that we took for heat, was not true heat. And I therefore think, that were our friends to direct towards their inner spiritual growth all the portion of attention and energy, which they devote to the sustainement of the outer form of a community amongst themselves — it would be better both for them and for God’s cause. Communities and external organisations seem to me to be lawful and useful only, when they are inevitable consequences of a corresponding inner state. For instance, if two men, from a calculation, that it is more profitable to live in one house and...

Часть текста: had such a large spreading. I think that true Christianity with its ideal of chastity is the best remedy of the imaginary future excess of the population. I will take care that it should be translated in russian, if he will allow it. I liked it very much, also your answer to Schaw, 4 as I like all the pages signed by «Odd Man». I would be very glad to know your name and be in direct intercourse with you. Have you many subscribers to your magazine? I wish the greatest success to your work, so very necessary in our time. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. P. S. Reading your very good note to the word «anarchism» I remembered on the same matter the saying of Lao-Tze; he says: when great sages have power over the people, the people do not notice them, if the power is in the hands of sages (not great ones), the people like them and praise them: if those who govern are less sage the people are afraid of them and where those who govern are still less sage, the people despise them. L. Tolstoy.

Часть текста: to one of my friends 1 on the same subject. That sexual relation without the wish and possibility of having children is worse than prostitution and onanism, and in fact is both. I say it is worse, because a person who commits these crimes, not being married, is always conscious of doing wrong, but a husband and a wife, which commit the same sin, think that they are quite righteous. Therefore your book (not speaking of its great merits) was very welcome to me. I should very much like to have your book sold in M[oscow] and P[etersburg].

Я. П. Dear Mrs. Daniel, I did not answer your letter before because I was ill and am not quite well till now. I am glad to hear that you intend to work at your article on land. Though it is very good as it is, it can only gain by it. 1 I appreciate also very much your idea of the connection of the three principles: of poverty, continence (as a degree of chastity) and of obedience to natural law. And I think and hope that you will express those ideas as strongly as all the articles of Worland and as simply and shortly as you say you wish to do it. The sole advice that I should wish to give you is to avoid polemic as much as possible. I have received also a letter from your husband 2 . I hope he will excuse me if I do not write to him separately and am asking you to be so kind say to him: 1) That although I like very much the Crank, I quite agree with him that it would de very good not only to combine gardening and agricultural work with writing, but to put the foundation of your life in manual work and keep publishing work as an accessory. Then he will not be afraid to be too successful. 2) That I hope I will send for the Crank something which should be worthy of it and 3) that I will be very glad to know his questions and answer them if I feel myself able to do it. With best wishes for you and your husband, your friend L. Tolstoy. 2/15 February 1907.

I like the book very, very much. Some of the pieces the choice is difficult, becouse all are very good — I will have translated in Russian and publisch. There is nothing more new and interesting as the most common subjects looked at from a Christian point of view. And that is what you are doing in your book and doing with talent and sincerity. I will very much like to see M-r Herron 3 but I am affraid that his ideas shall not be partaken by me. I think that Christian principles can have real influence only when they are thorough. Christianity can not bear halfmeasures. There is only the key for the lock that opens it. A key which is nearly the real one is of no use. If we can not be thorough in our lifes, deads [?]let us try to be as thorough as possible in our idead, because to be thorough in ones ideas there is no hindrance. I like very much...

Часть текста: last N 0 received by me — vol. III №4 — I appreciated very much the article «Plato and Shankaracharya» by Pandit Prabhu Dutt Shastri, М. А. В. T. You would very kind if you consented to help me with a work that I have lately begun, and which, I hope can be of some interest to you. I have begun a serie of expositions of all the great religions of the world, 1 the essence of which is always one and the same for all. Naturally the Vedic religion, as one of the most ancient and profound, must take in these series the first place. I wish to make a selection of the most striking and profound sentences of the Vedic religion. If you, or some your contributors, can and will help me in this matter by corresponding with me on the subject, I will be very thankful. With full esteem your friend, Leo Tolstoy. P. S. With the same mail I send you some of my books, which will, I hope, be of interest to you. 1909. А. Б. Т.
