Часть текста: nor Confucianism can give. All the great teachers of humanity have at all time preached the brotherhood of men, but it is Christianity alone, which points out the way, whereby this can be attained. You have translated my works, such as «the Kreuzer Sonata» etc., but I very much wish to make the Japanese public familiar with true Christianity, as I think its founder conceived it. This, as far as I could, I expounded in my book: «The kingdom of god is within you». I think, these books or, at least, an exposition of their contents might be of interest to the Japanese people and might show them, that Christianity is not a collection of miracle narratives, but a very srtict exposition of that idea of human life, which gives wise neither to despair, nor to indifference about ones conduct, but which leads to a most definite moral activity. I advised your friends to order from Geneva those books, which you would like to have. But if you wish it, I will myself send you for translation the book, on which I am now engaged. As far, as I have been able to make it, it contains the most condensed and precise exposition of the Christian teaching. I gave Toku-Tomi some articles 3 to be sent to you. If these will prove of any use to you, I shall be very pleased. Now farewell. I would grasp your hand in friendship. I send you every good wish. Léon Tolstoy. 30 September 1896. Дорогой Кониси, Я очень рад был познакомиться с Току-Томи и его спутником: 1 они показались мне очень просвещенными и свободными в ...

Часть текста: Societies seems to us to be of much greater importance than the one we play in God’s great Society. But this is only an illusion; all the three modes of activity which you mention in your letter will be more surely attained by a man who regards himself a member of God’s great Society, than by a member of Tolstoy’s Society. Such a man who is earnest, as I know you are, will, firstly spread as much as he can the ideas that give him peace of conscience and energy in life without minding whether they are Tolstoy’s or anybody else’s. He will secondly try with all his might to induce people to speak their mind on the most important questions of life. He will, thirdly, try to give every person he comes in contact with, as much joy and happiness as it in his power to do and will also help those who get into difficulties through strictly following the teaching of Christ. A man belonging to God’s great Society, will beside that perform many other useful Christian acts which have neither been foreseen nor formulated by Tolstoy’s or any other Society. I own there are some advantages in the union of persons of the same mind who form Societies; but, I think, the drawbacks of such organisations are much greater that their advantages, And so I think, for myself, that it would be a great loss to me to change my membership of God’s great Society for the most seemingly useful participation in any human Society. I am very sorry, dear friend, to differ from your opinion, but I cannot think otherwise. Your friend Leo Tolstoy.

Я. П. Dear Sir, I got your two books and thank you heartily for them. It is the greatest joy of my life to know persons such as you and to see, that the ideas, which I live for, are likewise the mainspring of life unto others and are expressed in such beautiful and vigourous style, as I had occasion to notice in your two books. Both your books are remarkably good and I cannot give preference to either of them. In the «Old order and the New» the Christian truth serves to corroborate the truth of the Socialistic tendencies; whereas in the «Gospel of the Poor» it is the Socialistic, Communistic and Anarchistic theories that serve to corroborate the Christian truth, which occupies the most prominent part. Though while there is a censorship in Russia, the publishing of these books is out of the question, yet I shall get some of my friends to translate them, and will then spread them. The ennemies of the Kingdom of God have but one means left them it is to hush up the truth and make believe, they neither hear nor comprehend it — the fact of which was so strikingly acknowleged by the French, when they prohibited to publish the processes of...

Часть текста: which is endeavouring not only to retain the slaves in their servitude, but also by depraving the people to intensify their slavery in the future. I regard as stupid the action of our present government, because if it had put into practice Henry Georgeis principle that land cannot become exclusive property, — a principle always recognised and still recognised by the great mass of the Russian peasantry, — this measure alone, more effectually than all the acts of violence and cruelty now being accomplished by the government, would have pacified the people, and rendered impossible the codtinuation of the revolution. Whereas the Russian government has had recourse to a measure pricisely contrary to such an one by encouraging in every way the transference of the land from communal ownership to private individual ownership. 1 In this I see the government's astounding stupidity. Whilst in those measures which the government applies for the repression of the dissafection amongst the people naturally flowing from their want in land, is manifested the government’s astounding cruelty. Therefore the activity of the Single-Tax League organised in England is especially gladdening. Henry George is especially to be appreciated by those who profess Christianity in its true sense, for not only are the foundations of his teaching, but also his methods truly Christian. As Jesus in his utterance, «Ye have heard that it was said: Thou shalt not...

Часть текста: июня 1896 г. 87. Джону Кенворти (John Kenworthy). 1896 г. Июня 27. Я . П. 28 July 1896. Dear friend, I have received your very interesting letter and I am anxious to answer you, especially about the transformation or rather spiritual growth, that is going on in our friends of the «Brotherhood Chucrh» (I do not like those names; they promise too much: it would be well, if in the transformation they would drop this name). 1 I think, that a great part of the evil of the world is due to our wishing to see the realization of what we are striving at, but are not ready for, and therefore being satisfied with the semblance of that, which should be. Compulsory governement organization is indeed nought else, than the semblance of good order, which is maintained by prisons, gallows, police, army and workhouses. Of real order there is none; only, that which infringes, it is hidden from our view in prisons, penal settlements and slums. And I think, that the dicease remains so long uncured, because it is concealed. So likewise with brotherhood or church communities. They also are semblances. There cannot be a community of saints among sinners. I think, that the members of a community in order to keep the semblance of sainthood must necessarily commit many new sins. We are so created, that we cannot become perfect either one by one, or in groups, but (from the very nature of the case) only all together. The warmth of any drop (or particle) is transmitted to all the others. And were it possible to conserve the heat of one particle, so that it should not pass to the others and therefore did not cool — it would only...

Часть текста: Л. Н. - Ферису Томасу (Thomas Н. Ferris), 19 апреля 1903 г. 127. Томасу Ферису (Thomas Н. Ferris). 1903 г. Апреля 19. Я. П. Dear Mr. Ferris, It is for the last time I answer your letter. I beg you to understand that I cannot avail myself to your desire, I do not presume that I know all that is to be known, but it is not through spiritualism that I intend to seek the truth. I beg you not to come. I have neither the time nor the wish to receive you, so I hope that there will be no more question of your coming here to see me. L. T. Apr. 1903.
