Н. Я. П. Jan. 30/12 Febr. 1907. Jasnaja Poliana. Mr. Benedict Prieth. Dear Sir, I delayed my answer to your letter because of illness. I knew the sad news of Ernest Crosby’s death before, but nevertheless I thank you for your letter. Though a sad one, it is a satisfaction to see a true appreciation of the rare qualities and high character of one's best friends. What you say of him, that he never said an evil word of anyone, is one of the greatest commendations that can be said of any man. I hope that E. Crosby could not estimate me more than I loved and estimated him. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 1907.

Часть текста: nevertheless it will have a beneficient influence on many people who think that there can be only material motives for activity. I could find fault with them only if I was convinced that they have neglected more important things than the use of animals. But as I don’t know it I can not judge them. If I would not have advised them to do what they did I can not help admiring their abnegation for spiritual motives. I hope that the arrival of Veriguine will have a good unfluence on them. Thanking you again for your letter I remain yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 13 December 1902.

Часть текста: suiting the age of those to whom they are directed. I received the tracts you sent me and read them not only with interest but with profit, and cannot criticise them because I agree with everything that is said in them. There is only one question that I should wish to ask you. You are, as I know non-resistants. How do you manage to keep communial, but nevertheless property? Do you acknowledge the possibility for a Christian to defend property from usurpators? I ask this question because I think that the principle of non-resistance is the chief trait of true Christianity and the greatest difficulty in our time is to be true to it. How do you manage to do so in your community? With sincere respect and love yours truly Leo Tolstoy. I received your tracts, you say in your letter that [you] have sent me books, did you mean them or did you send me books calling the tracts books? I received more than a year the Oregon paper World Advance Thought, sometimes. I saw in it your articles. 2 I am very thankful to the editor for sending this paper; in every № I get spiritual nourishment if it were not for some spiritistic tendency that is foreign to me. Who is the editor and how long ago has it been founded? [I] agree with all its religious views. I like this paper very much.

Часть текста: for those children to be taken away and not others. The parents came to me, asking for help. I could not help them otherwise than by writing a letter to the Emperor, which I sent him through A. Olsoufieff. Now, in «Grajdanine» («Гражданин») Meschersky accuses the missionaries of Kazan of proposing the cruel mesure of taking children from their sectarian parents. So that we are made to believe that that measure cannot be used in Russia. And nevertheless the children are taken away from their parents. The parents are vainly trying in all government institutions to find justice, and have yeasterday again come to me, asking for help. I can only do two things: write the whole story in foreign papers, or try again to make it known to the Emperor. I have chosen the latter, and have again written a letter to the Emperor, which I ask you to be so kind as to forward to him. I think every one of us ought to try to undeceive him, so I hope you will not be angry with me for my request. I beg you to believe me, dear Sir, yours sincerely Leo Tolstoy. 1897. September 19. Toula. Jasnaya Poliana.

Я. П. Dear Sir. You write that you wish me encouragement in my work. There is no more joyful encouragement for me, than the receiving of such letters as yours. As for your questions, I will very gladly try to answer them as well as I can. 1) I have got nothing against the usual assembling of people confessing the Christian doctrine on Sundays in halls that they call churches. But I think, that these assemblies ought not to be devoted, as they usually are, to public and uniform public prayers, firstly, because the repetition on Sunday in the same words is perfectly useless, as it very soon becomes a mechanical procedure; secondly and chiefly, because in the Gospels this error is plainly pointed out and it is there definitely said (Math. VI), that one should not pray in public places, but in solitude, which is corroborated both by the reason and the experience of every man, who has ever sincerely prayed to God, as the assembly of people only distracts, makes one’s thoughts wander and diverts them. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms. One may suggest, that men of the same spirit, meeting together on Sunday, should bring to their meeting such religious books or articles which they find in ancient and modern literature and read and discuss them together; one may suggest, that meeting together on Sunday men of the same spirit should arrange dinners for the poor and themselves serve those dinners; one may suggest, that meeting together men of the same spirit should confess their sins to each other and discuss them. In short one can think of a hundred different forms of worship, which should all have for their aim a mutual spiritual help and should not be mechanical, but sensible. 2) Do I believe in the resurrection and that there is a...

Dear Sir, I thank you for sending me your book «The moral damage of War». I have looked it through and think that it is a very useful book. But unluckily there are very few people who have ears to hear. Nevertheless, I think it is our duty to propagate the truth that we know as much as we can. And you have done it in writing this very good book. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. I am ill and bedridden and therefore could not write in my own handwriting.

Часть текста: them. The governor of the Caucasus Golitzine has told them that if they remain true to their faith they will be kept in the same position i. e. be starved to death, and that if they give in, they will be restorted to their former welfare. Many, — nearly 200 of them could not hold out and did recant from their faith, saying that they know it si wrong but they could not longer wittness the sufferings of their families. But those which remain true are in a desperate condition. They are nearly 3000, but they have in all no more than 70 000 roubles, which is not half enough for their emigration, especially because they must pay 10 r. per head for their passeports. Our friend from the christian Commonwealth has sent to me a proposition to settle them in Texas. 1 I forwarded this letter to the English Committee for the emigration of the Douchoborys, and this proposition pleased very much to the Douchoborys themselves. Now what I ask of you is that you should inform us i. e. the commitee ...

Часть текста: joy, for it is a long time, that I know you and love you. Though the paths we go by are different, I do not think, that we differ in the foundation of our thoughts. I was very glad to see you mention twice in your letter the life to come. There is nothing, that widens so much the horizon, that gives such a firm support or such a clear view of things, as the consciousness, that allthough it is but in this life, that we have the possibility and the duty to act, nevertheless this is not the whole of life, but that bit of it only, which is open to our understanding. I shall wait with great impatience for the appearance of your new book, which will contain the so much needed criticism of the orthodox political economy. 1 The reading of every one of your books makes clear to me things, which were not so before, and confirms me more and more in the truth on practicability of your system. Still more do I rejoice at the thought, that Imay possibly see you. 2 My summer I invariably spend in the country near Tula. With sincere affection I am truly your friend Leon Tolstoy. 8 April 1896.

Часть текста: to do with this matter. 2 If I thought, that it is good for a Christian to have money at his disposal and that good could be done by money, I would have kept my fortune and would help people by my money. But as I think, that a Christian ought not to have any property and that it is impossible to do any good through money, I can never ask for money, nor for me, nor for anybody else. If people find right, as you do, to give their money to other men and will do it through me, as they did in the time of the famine, I will do as they wish, but I would rather not have anything to do with money matters, which are always full of sin. And this is an example of it. You are not rich, but nevertheless you gave a good sum of money with the best wishes, and this gift of yours has awakened in me very bad feelings: it seemed to me, that you must reproach me of inconsistency or in want of delicacy, if not asking, letting others ask money for my friends from strangers, when the members of my family are rich. Excuse me for saying all this, but I prefer to be sincere with you, because I like and esteem you very much, and have retained from our intercourse the most kind remembrances. You...

Часть текста: compromise — a resultant between his feebleness and his striving to attain perfection. And such a compromise in practice is not a sin, but a necessary condition of every Christian life. The great sin is the compromise in theory, is the plan to lower the ideal of Christ in view to make it attainable. And I consider the admission of force (be it even benevolent) over a madman (the great difficulty is to give a strict definition of a madman) to be such a theoretical compromise. In not admitting this compromise I run the risk only of my death or the death of other men who can be killed by the madman; but death will come sooner or later, and death in fulfilling the will of God is a blessing (as you put it yourself in your book); but in admitting this compromise I run the risk of acting contrary to the law of Christ — which is worse than death. It is the same with property. As soon as I admit in principle my right to property, I necessarily will try to keep it from others and to increase it, and therefore will deviate very far from the ideal of Christ. Only when I profess daringly that a Christian cannot have any property — will I in practice come near to the ideal of Christ in this instance. There is a striking example of such a deviation in theory about anger in Matth., V, 22, where the...
