I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small clique, composed of persons utterly alien in thought and aspiration and altogether inferior to those whom they enslave. These causes, as one can easily see from your letter, from the articles in «Free Hindustan», from the highly interesting writings of the Hindoo Swami Vivekananda...

All the great teachers of humanity have at all time preached the brotherhood of men, but it is Christianity alone, which points out the way, whereby this can be attained. You have translated my works, such as «the Kreuzer Sonata» etc., but I very much wish to make the Japanese public familiar with true Christianity, as I think its founder conceived it. This, as far as I could, I expounded in my book: «The kingdom of god is within you». I think, these books or, at least, an exposition of their contents might be of interest to the Japanese people and might show them, that Christianity is not a collection of miracle narratives, but a very srtict exposition of that idea of human life, which gives wise neither to despair, nor to indifference about ones conduct, but which leads to a most definite moral activity. I advised your friends to order from Geneva those books, which you would like to have. But if you wish it, I will myself send you for translation the book, on which I am now engaged. As far, as I have been able to make it, it contains the most condensed and precise exposition of the Christian teaching. I gave Toku-Tomi some articles 3 to be sent to you. And the same stands for all the miracles of the gospel. I think that the faith in the miracle excludes the faith in the teaching. If Christ could make all men healthy and rich (if he could make wine out of water, he could make all men rich) he should have done it instead of teaching men how to be blessed without health and riches. Those who accept the miracles, accept them only because they do not want to accept the teaching. 2) The divinity of Christ? The chief meaning of the definition of God is that He is a being different from man, above him and therefore if I say that man is God, I say a contradiction, just as if I said: spirit (the definition of which is something that is not matter) — spirit is matter. Dear friend, Last spring I was busy writing a book about marriage 1 and I got quite new views of the matter. At the same time I was reading the books I could get about communiti’s in America. I read Noyes 2 book and a book of a German 3 whose name I forgot. In those books I found quite new notions for me about the Shakers. At the same time I received a letter from a Shaker with books, treats and three photographs. I read the books and was very thankfull to the brother, 4 who sent me them, but infortunally I lost the letter with the address, so that I could not answer and thank him. Now I received your books, and treats and letter. I read it all and thank you for it. All this strengthens my vews on marriage, which I expose in my book that I am just now finishing. I think that the ideal of a christian always was and must be complete chastity and appreciate very much your books about that matter. I know that you, shakers, speak always the truth and therefore expect the same from others. So I will tell you frankly all what I think of your religious views. I think that you profess the true christian religion and the true christian life, but you believe in two things in which I never can believe and you ought not: firstly, in the saintity of the whole Bible, including in it the old Testament, the Epistles and the Revelation of mother Ann, 5 and secondly that you believe in manifestation ...

As it is impossible to trace in reality a mathematically straight line and as every such line is only an approach to the latter, so is every degree of perfection attainable by man — only an approach to the perfection of the Father, which Christ showed us the way to emulate. Therefore, in reality, every deed of the best man and his whole life will be always only a practical compromise — a resultant between his feebleness and his striving to attain perfection. And such a compromise in practice is not a sin, but a necessary condition of every Christian life. The great sin is the compromise in theory, is the plan to lower the ideal of Christ in view to make it attainable. And I consider the admission of force (be it even benevolent) over a madman (the great difficulty is to give a strict definition of a madman) to be such a theoretical compromise. The governor of the Caucasus Golitzine has told them that if they remain true to their faith they will be kept in the same position i. e. be starved to death, and that if they give in, they will be restorted to their former welfare. Many, — nearly 200 of them could not hold out and did recant from their faith, saying that they know it si wrong but they could not longer wittness the sufferings of their families. But those which remain true are in a desperate condition. They are nearly 3000, but they have in all no more than 70 000 roubles, which is not half enough for their emigration, especially because they must pay 10 r. per head for their passeports. Our friend from the christian Commonwealth has sent to me a proposition to settle them in Texas. 1 I forwarded this letter to the English Committee for the emigration of the Douchoborys, and this proposition pleased very much to the Douchoborys themselves. Now what I ask of you is that you should inform us i. e. the commitee in England (adress Kenworthy or Tchertkoff), how much acres could they have in Texas at what price; 2) that you should inform us also at what price the ships could take the men for the passage and 3) to rise in America a subscription for an emigration fund for the Duochoborys. — I have collected till now about 5000. They defend to publish about it in Russia. 2 But I will nevertheless try to collect more by personal [appeals] to persons who can and will help. By many signs of the times I think that «verily, verily I say unto you the hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God». I think so because not only in you but in many people of different culture I see this awakening consciousness that we are deceived, that the organization of our life is a mockery of the teaching of Christ which we profess. That this life is miserable and sinful, and that it could he blissful and holy. And that for to attain this end we have only to shake off the ancient imposture in which we now live. Do you know the writings of Matthew Arnold? His «Literature and Dogma», Parker’s discourse on religious subjects, Garrison’s «Non-resistance» and his «declaration of sentiments»? All this and many others is the same that you and I speak and write of, viz. that Christ gave us a programme of life as an architect would have given the plan of a building and a deceiver would have stolen the plan and put a false one in it’s stead, to compromise the architect. I think that many people over the world are begining to get aware that they are Labouring under a mistake and turn to the true teaching of Christ. I think that the hour is coming, but that we must remember the words said by Christ to his disciples. «Be ye therefore wise as serpentes, and harmless as doves». We must remember that every fault of ours destroys God’s work. And therefore according to your wish I do the following comments upon your book. Часть текста: Mr. Jones has noted quite rightly in refusing to help in the coercion that was wanted for the general good. (Coercion and all kind of violence is always wanted for the general good). To say that he acted rightly is not the adequate expression. I think he acted as he did because he could not act otherwise. To use coercion for a true christian is like a physical impossibility. And this impossibility is determining the position that such a man can occupy in society. Therefore I think that for a christian it is not necessary to renounce the position that he occupies for the reason of non-conformity of his position with his faith; he must only put in his position — it may be of an emperor, of a hangman, a president, a spy, a priest, a soldier, a judge — act in the position in which the christian enlightenment found him, as his conscience bids him, and the result will be just what it ought to be: he will be chassed from the position that he ocupied and that may be the best thing for him. That is what I think about the difficulty Mr. Jones is in. It is great joy for me to know that there are men like Mr. Jones professing the christian doctrine not only in words but in deeds. Give him please my respect and love. What a pitiful state of jingoistic hypnotization is your people in now. It is dreadful but gives me nothing unexpected and new. In regard to your letter, the one before last, in which you write that soon you will have formed a community, I wished to answer you the following: Of course one can not but desire the largest spreading of that which one regards as the truth, and not only as an abstract truth, but as a practical one, such a truth, the acceptation of which would deliver men from their miseries and give them the greatest welfare; but, strange though it seems to say so nothing has so much hindered the spreading of the truth, as the too hasty desire to make others accept it. I have always been deeply affected by the seldom noticed words of Christ to his 70 disciples, when they returned from preaching and boasted of their success, saying that everywhere the devils were subject unto them: «In this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather, because your names are written in heaven». In other words: seek not exterior success visible to all men, do not count your proselytes, as do the churchmen & the salvation army, 1 but seek to be in the truth, never to deviate from it & success, thoough perhaps invisible to you, will follow, will certainly follow, because when a man is in the truth he will act and his action will inevitably have the most fruitful results, if even they will not be visible to him. The same is expressed in the words «Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness & all these things shall be added unto you»; & in the words: «Be ye wise as serpents, & harmless as doves».
