1. Letter to a Hindoo (Письмо к индусу)
Входимость: 1. Размер: 77кб.
Часть текста: thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small clique, composed of persons utterly alien in thought and aspiration and altogether inferior to those whom they enslave. These causes, as one can easily see from your letter, from the articles in «Free Hindustan», from the highly interesting writings of the Hindoo Swami Vivekananda and others, are in accord with that which causes the distress of all the peoples of our time; in the absence of a rational religious teaching which, while elucidating the meaning of life to the people in an equal way, would also make clear the higher law, which should be a guide to conduct, and in the substitution for them of the more than dubious propositions of a false religion...

Часть текста: 1896 г. 16. Джону Кенворти (John Kenworty). 1896 г . Февраля 4. Москва . My dear Friend, Sympathising with all my heart with the aims of your Brotherhood Publishing С°, I intend to put at your disposition the first translation of all my writings as yet unpublished, as well as forthcoming. Should you find it in any way expedient, as for instance in order to secure for them a wider circulation, to offer the first publication of any of my works to one of the English periodical papers or magazines, and should any pecuniary profit therefrom ensue, I would desire it to be devoted to the work of your Brotherhood Publishing Company. As for the further right of publishing my works (i. e. after this the first appearance in English, which I intend placing at your disposal), they are to become public property in accordance with a statement I have formerly made public and now desire to confirm. — Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. Moscow, 4 Feb. 1896. Мой дорогой друг, Всем сердцем сочувствуя целям Братского...

Часть текста: (Mohandas Gandhi). 1909 г. Сентября 25/октября 8. Я. П. 7 Oct. 1909. I have just received your most interesting letter which has given me great pleasure. God helps our dear brothers and coworkers in the Transvaal. That some strugle of the tender against the harsh, of meekness and love against pride and violence, is every year making itself more and more felt here among us also, especially, in one of the very sharpest of the conflicts of the religious law with the wordly laws — in refusals of military service. Such refusals are becoming ever more and more frequent. The letter to a Hindu was written by me, 1 and the translation is a very good one. The title of the book about Krishna shall bo sent you from Moscow. 2 As to the word reincarnation, 3 I should not myself like to omit it, for, in my opinion, belief in reincarnation can never be as firm as belief in the soul's immortality and in God's justice and love. You may, however, do as you like about omitting it. The translation into, and circulation of my letter in the Hindoo language, can only be a pleasure for me. A competition, 4 i. e. an offer of a monetary inducement, in connection with a religious matter, would, I think, be out of place. If I can assist your publication, I shall be very glad. 5 I greet you fraternally, and am glad to have intercourse with you. [7 окт. 1909.] Сейчас получил ваше в высшей степени и интересное и доставившее мне большую радость письмо. Помогай бог нашим...
