Часть текста: ascended the sky, he is ascending it still and never will reach the seat at the right hand of his father. And the same stands for all the miracles of the gospel. I think that the faith in the miracle excludes the faith in the teaching. If Christ could make all men healthy and rich (if he could make wine out of water, he could make all men rich) he should have done it instead of teaching men how to be blessed without health and riches. Those who accept the miracles, accept them only because they do not want to accept the teaching. 2) The divinity of Christ? The chief meaning of the definition of God is that He is a being different from man, above him and therefore if I say that man is God, I say a contradiction, just as if I said: spirit (the definition of which is something that is not matter) — spirit is matter. Christ being God is a belief that can be kept only by people who do not want to accept his teaching. If Christ is man the chief purport of his advent is his teaching and if I accept Christ as teacher I must follow his doctrine, but if he is God his teaching is only a little part of his significance. The chief thing is the story of his relation to the Father, the punishement of innocent people, the atonement, the sacrements, the church, the pope and so on, but not his teaching which cannot be accepted by the clergy, because it destroys at once their position and shows that their vocation is only a pretence to feed at the cost of the people. 3) About personal immortality? I think that in this life internal experience shows us that the less we live our personal life, the more we feel sure of immortality, and the reverse, so that by analogy we must think that immortality must coincide with complete renunciation of self. I said all I thought about this matter in the last chapters of my book «On Life»....

Emerson r 3 Ballou 4 and Thoreau, 5 not as the greatest, but as those who I think specially influenced me. Others names are: Channing, 6 Whithier, 7 Lowell, 8 Walt Whitman 9 — a bright constallation, such as is rarely to be found in the literatures of the world. And I should like to ask the American people, why they do not pay more attention to these voices (hardly to be replaced by those of Gould, 10 Rockfeller 11 and Carnegie 12 ) and continue the good work in which they made such hopeful progress. My kind regards to your wife, and I take opportunity of once more thanking her for her excellent translation of «The Kingdom of God is within you». 13 Yours truly, Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: but the contents of which I would like to communicate to you. 2 I say, that in our time there were two wars going on: one the Spanish American war, which is finished, and the other war against war which is still going on and which will finish only with all the wars in the world. This is the war, that the Douchobortsy and all the true Christians are making against the Russian and all the military government. I hear that you have great heroes who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans). I got letters from Americans, who engage me to write about this noble work of their sailors and soldiers as they call it. 3 But I find that the work done by the American army and fleet was quite the opposite of noble and all these heroes are disgusting. I can imagine an old weak man full of superstitions, who thinks, that he can solve a dispute by boxing, but when I see a young a strong man who by his culture and the ideas of his time ought be know better accept the challenge of the old man and beat this silly old man and be proud of it, I am quite disgusted. And this is the aspect of the American war. I dont speak of the motives of the war, or better say the pretext, because there can not be true motives for a war, for killing people with the purpose of...

Часть текста: your lecturing may be very useful, your energy can be better employed in bookwriting; I read always with great pleasure your articles in the Crank, 6 a very good publication. I am sorry for the Americans, not for Adin Balou, 7 that his name and work are unknown to them. Do not wait to come to Russia till our revolution is settled. It will not be so soon. As to the disturbances that are going on now, they are only the precursors of the great revolution, which I hope will begin at once everywhere and will consist in the annihilation of state power. You are still a young man and can have the opportunity to see the great change. Not so I. Therefore the sooner you come the more chances I will have to see you again before my great voyage. Your friend Leo Tolstoy. 25 April 1906.
