Часть текста: feel and understand than as Love and that the soul of man is an emanation of this principle, the development of which is what we call human life — is a truth that is more or less consciously felt by every man and therefore accessible to the most scientifically developed minds as well as to the most simple. This truth is the foundation of the religion of Krishna and of all religions. But in the religion of Krishna, as well as in all ancient religions, there are statements which not only cannot be proved, but which are clearly products of uncontrolled imagination and which, moreover, are quite unnecessary for the conception of the essential truth and the affirmation of rules of conduct which flow out of the fundamental principle. Such are all the cosmological and historical affirmations of creations, durability of the world, all the stories of miracles, the theory of the four ages and the immoral and contradictory to the fundamental principle organization of casts. Dear friend and brother, the task which is before you is to state the truth common to all men, which can and must unify the whole humanity in one and the same faith, and one and the same rule of conduct based on it. Humanity must unite in one and the same faith, because the soul of...

Часть текста: that such a man can occupy in society. Therefore I think that for a christian it is not necessary to renounce the position that he occupies for the reason of non-conformity of his position with his faith; he must only put in his position — it may be of an emperor, of a hangman, a president, a spy, a priest, a soldier, a judge — act in the position in which the christian enlightenment found him, as his conscience bids him, and the result will be just what it ought to be: he will be chassed from the position that he ocupied and that may be the best thing for him. That is what I think about the difficulty Mr. Jones is in. It is great joy for me to know that there are men like Mr. Jones professing the christian doctrine not only in words but in deeds. Give him please my respect and love. What a pitiful state of jingoistic hypnotization is your people in now. It is dreadful but gives me nothing unexpected and new. This terrible evil and superstition which is called a virtue and which is unhappily so strong in America — patriotism could not produce anything else. They do not gather grapes from thornes... And so patriotism produces only lies, violence, murder. The sole sorrow of my old age is that I have not succeded to communicate to my brothers the truth which I feel with the same evidence as I feel the light of the sun. That patriotism must lead to lies, violence, murder and the loss not only of material wellbeing but of the greatest moral depravation. I am not yet discouraged and am now writing again on the same subject an article entitled «Carthago delenda est»; I will speak and write on this theme till my last...

Часть текста: the best preceptes the smalest good deed. Ruskin says, that the best men, those which have done the greatest good to humanity are those that we do not know of. The chief difference between words and deeds is, that words are always intended for men for their aprobation, but deeds can be done only for God. Though it is possible to utter words only with the intention to fulfill the will of God it is very difficult not to think about the impression w[h]ich they will produce on men and not to form them accordingly. But deeds you can do quite unknown to men only for God. And such deeds are the greatest joy that a man can experience. As to his plan to live amongst prostitutes and tramps... I can not say that I approuve of it. Rather not. I think that to change own’s habitual life for such a one a man must [be] quite sure to be proof against the new temptations that will assail him in this new life. This refers also to your doubts about your life. I think that the changes in our life must come from the impossibility to live otherwise than accordingly to the demands of our conscience but...

Часть текста: are the grandson of a friend of this great man. 1 I w’ill translate your article and publish it and send to Canada to the Doukhobors. It will do them good. They will understand through it in what lies their strength and in what their feebleness. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 26 October 1903. П. И. Бирюкова, XXIII, М. 1913, стр. 73. Часть текста: I have only just finished the two books, 1 that you have sent me, and wish to express to you my gratitude for the books and their contents. I cannot express to you the joy that I experience in seeing a man of your ability and sincerity working at the same work in which I have put my life — and not because I choosed this vocation, but because it is sole work in this our life, that is worth to work for. I guess that you are in the same position, and I think that our task is to let people feel that in this life they have nothing else to do — as to help in the establishment of the kingdom of God, which cannot be established otherwise, than by establishing it in our own hearts by trying to be as perfect as is our Father in heaven. Tell me please, if you have many co-workers. Is the religious feeling alive in the English workmen? Is it not stifled by socialistic doctrines? I like very much the difference, that you establish between Socialism ans Christianity. We cannot too much insist upon it. Christianity for to be powerful must be pure from all mélange of Dogmatism, Sentimentalism, Evangelism, as well as of Socialism, Anarchy, or Philanthropism. Excuse my bad English, and believe me, Yours with hearty sympathy, Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: very good and I liked all the articles in it. It is quite true, as you say it in your article «The Social Need » 1 , and Herron 2 in his, that a Christian life is quite impossible in the present unchristian organization of society. The contradictions between his surroundings and his convictions are very painful for a man who is sincere in his сhristian faith, and therefore the organization of communities seems to such a man the only means of delivering himself from these contradictions. But this is an illusion. Every community is a small island in the mist of an ocean of unchristian conditions of life, so that the christian relations exist only between members of the colony but outside that must remain unchristian, otherwise the colony would not exist for a moment. And therefore to live in community cannot save a christian from the contradiction between his conscience and his life. I do not mean to say that I do not approve of communities such as your commonwealth, or that I do not think them to be a good thing. On the contrary, I approve of them with all my heart and am very interested in your commonwealth and wish it the greatest success. I think that every man who can free himself from the conditions of wordly life...

Часть текста: firstly, because the repetition on Sunday in the same words is perfectly useless, as it very soon becomes a mechanical procedure; secondly and chiefly, because in the Gospels this error is plainly pointed out and it is there definitely said (Math. VI), that one should not pray in public places, but in solitude, which is corroborated both by the reason and the experience of every man, who has ever sincerely prayed to God, as the assembly of people only distracts, makes one’s thoughts wander and diverts them. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms. One may suggest, that men of the same spirit, meeting together on Sunday, should bring to their meeting such religious books or articles which they find in ancient and modern literature and read and discuss them together; one may suggest, that meeting together on Sunday men of the same spirit should arrange dinners for the poor and themselves serve those dinners; one may suggest, that meeting together men of the same spirit should confess their sins to each other and discuss them. In short one can think of a hundred different forms of worship, which should all have for their aim a mutual spiritual help and should not be mechanical, but sensible. 2) Do I believe in the resurrection and that there is a hereafter? I believe in true, i. e. indestructible life which Christ has disclosed to us and for the which death does not exist. But this life should in no-wise be understood as a...

Часть текста: firmly believe this and always try to remember it and to act accordingly myself, and say it to those who ask my opinion and express it in my writings. If my conception of life is truly religious I cannot think otherwise, for this principle is the foundation of religion. And religion, true religion is and always has been one and the same ewerywhere. Thank you for the good feelings you express for me in your letter and allowing myself to reproach you for exagerating my importance, I remain your friend and brother 2 Leo Tolstoy. My friend V. Tchertkoff will send to you all my writings translated into English which can be of interest to you. L. T. 3 Febr. 1908.

I could not help them otherwise than by writing a letter to the Emperor, which I sent him through A. Olsoufieff. Now, in «Grajdanine» («Гражданин») Meschersky accuses the missionaries of Kazan of proposing the cruel mesure of taking children from their sectarian parents. So that we are made to believe that that measure cannot be used in Russia. And nevertheless the children are taken away from their parents. The parents are vainly trying in all government institutions to find justice, and have yeasterday again come to me, asking for help. I can only do two things: write the whole story in foreign papers, or try again to make it known to the Emperor. I have chosen the latter, and have again written a letter to the Emperor, which I ask you to be so kind as to forward to him. I think every one of us ought to try to undeceive him, so I hope you will not be angry with me for my request. I beg you to believe me, dear Sir, yours sincerely Leo Tolstoy. 1897. September 19. Toula. Jasnaya Poliana.

Часть текста: of depression in thinking that his efforts have been vain; he has only partaken of the fate of his and our Master. Tell him please, that his efforts have not been vain, they give great strength to people, as I can judge from myself. In those tracts I found all the objections that are generally made against «non-resistance» victoriously answered and also the true basis of the doctrine. I will endeavor to translate and propagate as much as I can, the works of Mr. Ballou, and I not only hope, but am convinced, that the time is come, «when the dead hear the voice of the Son of god; and they that hear shall live». The only comments that I wish to make on Mr. Ballou’s explanation of the doctrine, are, firstly, that I cannot agree with the concession that he makes for employing violence against drunkards and insane people, the Master made no concessions, and we can make none. We must try, as Mr. Ballou putsit, to mave impossible the existence of such persons, but if they are — we must use all possible means, sacrifice ourselves, but not employ violence. A true Christian will always prefer to be killed by a madman rather than to deprive him of his liberty. Secondly, that Mr. Ballou does not decide more categorically the question of property , for a true Christian not only cannot claim any rights of property, but the term «property» cannot have any signification for him, all that he uses, a Christian only uses till somebody does not takes it from him, he cannot defend his property, so he cannot have any. Property has been Achilles heel for the Quakers, and also for the Hopedale Community. 2 Thirdly, I think that for a true Christian, the term «government» (very properly defined by Mr. Ballou) cannot have any...
