Часть текста: other war against war which is still going on and which will finish only with all the wars in the world. This is the war, that the Douchobortsy and all the true Christians are making against the Russian and all the military government. I hear that you have great heroes who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans). I got letters from Americans, who engage me to write about this noble work of their sailors and soldiers as they call it. 3 But I find that the work done by the American army and fleet was quite the opposite of noble and all these heroes are disgusting. I can imagine an old weak man full of superstitions, who thinks, that he can solve a dispute by boxing, but when I see a young a strong man who by his culture and the ideas of his time ought be know better accept the challenge of the old man and beat this silly old man and be proud of it, I am quite disgusted. And this is the aspect of the American war. I dont speak of the motives of the war, or better say the pretext, because there can not be true motives for a war, for killing people with the purpose of...

Часть текста: churches. All the conferences can be resumed in one sentence: all men are sons of God and brothers and therefore must and ought to love and not to kill each other. Excuse my rudeness, all those conferences excite in me a very strong feeling of disgust for the hypocrisy which is so manifest in them. А. Г. Холлистеру (A. G. Hollister). 1889 г. Я. П. Dear friend, Last spring I was busy writing a book about marriage 1 and I got quite new views of the matter. At the same time I was reading the books I could get about communiti’s in America. I read Noyes 2 book and a book of a German 3 whose name I forgot. In those books I found quite new notions for me about the Shakers. At the same time I received a letter from a Shaker with books, treats and three photographs. I read the books and was very thankfull to the brother, 4 who sent me them, but infortunally I lost the letter with the address, so that I could not answer and thank him. Now I received your books, and treats and letter. I read it all and thank you for it. All this strengthens my vews on marriage, which I expose in my book that I am just now finishing. I think that the ideal of a christian always was and must be complete chastity and appreciate very much your books about that matter. I know that you, shakers, speak always the truth and therefore expect the same from others. So I will tell you frankly all what I think of your religious views. I think that you profess the true christian religion and the true christian life, but you believe in two things in which I never can believe and you ought not: firstly, in the saintity of the whole Bible, including in it the old Testament, the Epistles and the Revelation of mother Ann, 5...

There is no more joyful encouragement for me, than the receiving of such letters as yours. As for your questions, I will very gladly try to answer them as well as I can. 1) I have got nothing against the usual assembling of people confessing the Christian doctrine on Sundays in halls that they call churches. But I think, that these assemblies ought not to be devoted, as they usually are, to public and uniform public prayers, firstly, because the repetition on Sunday in the same words is perfectly useless, as it very soon becomes a mechanical procedure; secondly and chiefly, because in the Gospels this error is plainly pointed out and it is there definitely said (Math. VI), that one should not pray in public places, but in solitude, which is corroborated both by the reason and the experience of every man, who has ever sincerely prayed to God, as the assembly of people only distracts, makes one’s thoughts wander and diverts them. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms. One may suggest, that men of the same spirit, meeting ...

Часть текста: her to be completely chaste (in marriage or out of it) and to have no sexual intercourse at all. But if you ask what will be the consequences of such a belief (if such belief should become common to all, which cannot be before many and many centuries). I will answer you that I don’t know and don’t wish to know, because it is no business of mine: what I know is that for my soul and for everybody’s soul it will always be better to be chaste, than to indulge in sexual love. And this I know perfectly in my conscience, and you know the same, and this is business of mine, because it concerns my soul of which I have the charge. (You must excuse my bad English and try to understand what I mean). Judging by your letter you are in earnest about moral questions, i. e. conduct, and therefore I am sure that you will find the right way in this question as in others. Yours truly.

А. Рамазесхану (A. Ramaseshan). 1901 г. Я. П . Dear Sir, I thank you for your very interesting letter. I quite agree with you that your nation cannot accept the solution of the social problem which is proposed by Europe and which is no solution at all. A society or community kept together by force is not only in a provisory state, but in a very dangerous one. The bonds that keep together such a society are always in danger of being broken and the society itself — liable to experience the greatest evils. In such a position are all the European states. The only solution of the social problem for reasonable beings endowed with the capacity of love is the abolition of violence and the organization of society based on mutual love and reasonable principles, voluntarily accepted by all. Such a state can be attained only by the development of true religion. By the words «true religion» I mean the fundamental principles of all religions which are 1) the consciousness of the divine essence of human soul and 2) respect for its manifestation — human life. Your religion is very old and very profound in its metaphysical definition of the relation of man to the spiritual All — the Atman; but I think it was maimed in its moral, i. e. practical application to life; by the existence of caste. This practical application to life, so far as I know, has been made only by Jainism, 1 Buddhism and some of your sects, such as Kabir Panchis 2 in which the fundamental principle is the sacredness of life and consequently the prohibition to take the life of any living being, especially of man. All the evils...

Часть текста: me your religious views. I am very much interested in the religious beliefs of the Japanese. I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man, what is the meaning of the life that he is obliged to live. You speak in your letter of the Russian revolution and the reforms that are to be in Japan. I think that there is only one revolution and one reform impending everywhere in the world: it is the destruction of not only all great states, but of all kind of states, the liberation of men from obedience to human power. I have written a book about it (the last) which has for title «The end of the age». It has been translated into english 3 and I will ask my friend in England 4 to send you a copy, but may be you can get one in your libraries. Please let me have your opinion on the ideas expressed in that book. I thank you heartily for your letter, your books and your sympathy to me. Give please my regards to your wife and ask her, if it is not presuming too much, to write me, if it is possible in a few words her religious belief: what does she live for and ...

Я. П. Dear Friend, I received your letter 1 and the draft for ninety-two roubles, and will send it to Tchertkoff, who will forward it to its destination. I am sorry that Tchertkoff adressed himself through you to the Society of Friends, and will avow it to you, that it is very disagreable to me, that I have something to do with this matter. 2 If I thought, that it is good for a Christian to have money at his disposal and that good could be done by money, I would have kept my fortune and would help people by my money. But as I think, that a Christian ought not to have any property and that it is impossible to do any good through money, I can never ask for money, nor for me, nor for anybody else. If people find right, as you do, to give their money to other men and will do it through me, as they did in the time of the famine, I will do as they wish, but I would rather not ...
