1. Letter to a Hindoo (Письмо к индусу)
Часть текста: of the teaching of the Veddas by Vivekananda.   I Do not seek rest in that plane where the earthly gives birth to thoughts and desires, for if thou dost, thou wilt be dragged through the rough wilderness of life, which is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing...

Dear Sir, You are asking me a question which I am trying to solve those 20 last years. When we for the first time understand what true Christian life should be and how far from this Christian life is the life that we are living, it seems to us so natural and so easy to abandon the false wordly life and [lead] the true, happy one, that we arе astonished of finding hindrances to this change and ascribe generally those hindrances to our exclusive position. But in this we are mistaken. We think that our Christian life will begin when wе will be free from our wordly ties, but it begins when we are trying to undo those ties, and this undoing them in a Christian fashion without acting contrary to the principle in the name of which wo are chan ging our life, i. e. the love and the absence of violence is the main thing for a Christian. So that I think that a Christian, — and you in your case — must not try to show to others what true life is, but to make in his soul the internal change, which will bring you not in the position, that you imagine yourself you must occupy, but which will be the necessary result of your internal change. When the seventy came back to Christ and said to him, that the devils obeyed them, he answered: don’t be glad of your power over the devils, but try that your names should be written in Heaven. I think that you know all this better than I, and will excuse me for writing what may be superfluous to you. I write this because I have...

Часть текста: but of the whole social reformation movement, which is going on now with so great intensity in the whole world. The solution of the labour question will not solve the social question, but the social question includes the labour question. And the social question can be solved only by the annulment of every kind of restraint used by one man or reunion of men over any other man or men. And this can only be done by change of public opinion. The social question will be solved only when it will be regarded by the great majority of men as base, shameful, abject and revilling a man to a beast to use violence against every other man, as to be a thief or murderer. And this opinion is more and more going to be general, and to establish this public opinion is what I have worked for with all my strength and will work for to my last day. I will beg my daughter to put my photo in this letter if she has one. Wishing you succes in your and our common work, I remain yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 17 Oct. 1895.

Crowford). 1893 г. In answer to your letter I have the honour of informing you that this year the famine in one part of the country is not less severe than it was last [year] and that our work has been continued during this year, although not in the same measure as last. This year we have over 90 refectories (kitchens). Our means are not so ample as they were last year. Moreover we have overreached our budget, — as the want of fire wood has been greater than we expected it. Therefore every gift from American benefactors for our famine stricken peasants will be gratefully accepted.

1909 г. Я. П. Jasnaya Poliana, Tula, Russia, March 31-st 1909. The fulfilment of Henry George’s teaching, i. e. the emancipation of the land from the right of property or, speaking more accurately, the emancipation of men from enlavery through the right of property of some over the land is in our time as urgently necessary, as was fifty years ago the emancipation of men in America and Russia from direct slavery. Unfortunately, as direct slave-owners endeavoured with all their power to retain direct slavery, which was advantageous for them, so also at the present time the wealthy classes use all their power for the retention of indirect slavery based upon landed property. In Russia, where people have never recognised landed property, this infamous action is particularly loathsome on the part of a stupid and coarse government which is endeavouring not only to retain the slaves in their servitude, but also by depraving the people to intensify their slavery in the future. I regard as stupid the action of our present government, because if it had put into practice Henry Georgeis principle that land cannot become exclusive property, — a principle always recognised and still recognised by the great mass of the Russian peasantry, — this measure alone, more effectually than all the acts of violence and cruelty now being accomplished by the government, would have pacified the people, and rendered impossible the codtinuation of the revolution. Whereas the...

Я. П. Dear Mr. Crosby. I received both your letters as well as the volume of Mr. Trevors newspaper 1 and thank you very much for sending it to me. I found in the volume many interesting articles, one of those is about Thoreau 2 by Trevor and another a beautiful sermon on the text of James’ epistle. 3 I wish success to Mr. Trevor in his work and think, that he has no reason to be despondent, because he has so many coworkers over the world, and the noble work, at which he is working, is the unique real human work of our time. I am very glad to know that you have taken the side of the working men and expect to hear about you as a champion of the good cause. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 2/14 September 1894. The organ of the Labour church» («Пророк труда. (John Tamplyn) «A new sermon from an old text» («Новая проповедь на старый текст»), напечатанная в «The Labour Prophet» 1893, № 24, декабрь, стр. 118—120.

Часть текста: me. Others names are: Channing, 6 Whithier, 7 Lowell, 8 Walt Whitman 9 — a bright constallation, such as is rarely to be found in the literatures of the world. And I should like to ask the American people, why they do not pay more attention to these voices (hardly to be replaced by those of Gould, 10 Rockfeller 11 and Carnegie 12 ) and continue the good work in which they made such hopeful progress. My kind regards to your wife, and I take opportunity of once more thanking her for her excellent translation of «The Kingdom of God is within you». 13 Yours truly, Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: that I could not do it. So you must excuse me for my long silence. I read your letter twice and considered the matter as well as I could and could not arrive at a definite solution of the question. You may be right but I think not for every person which will read the book. It can have a bad influence over persons who will read not the whole book and not take in the sense of it. It might also have quite the opposite influence so as it was intented to. All what I can say in my defense is that when I read a book the chief interest for me is the Weltanschau[u]ng des Authors, what he likes and what he hates. And I hope that the reader, which will read my book with the same view will find out what the author likes or dislikes and will be influenced with the sentiment of the author. And I can say that when I wrote the book I abhorred with all my heart the lust and to express this abhorrence was one of the chief aims of the book. If I have failed in it I am very sorry and I am pleading guilty if I was so inconsiderate in the scene of which you write, that I could have produced such a bad impression on your mind. I think that we will be judged by our conscience and by God — not for the results of our deeds, which we can not know, but for our intentions. And I hope that my intentions were not bad. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 7 December 1901.
