Je me suis rarement vu compris aussi complètement que v[ou]s l’avez fait, ce qui v[ou]s devait être d’autant plus difficile que mon ouvrage principal, celui qui forme le fondement de tous mes autres écrits, — La critique de la théologie orthodoxe et la concordance et [la] traduction des 4 évangiles — avec commentaires et explications vous a été inconnu, comme il l’est en général au public étranger. Cet ouvrage, éctit entre 1879 et 1882, vient d’être publié pour la première fois en Genève en russe et n’a jamais été traduit. 1 Un extrait de cet ouvrage a été traduit et publié en France dans la Revue Nouvelle il y a de cela près de 10 ans. 2 Je regrette beaucoup que ma femme, parmis les renseignements qu’elle vous a communiqué[es], ne v[ou]s ait pas parlé de cet article. Dans cette lettre je vous parle des Douchoborys et de la raison, pour laquelle ils sont persécutés. Un de ces jours je vous enverrai un article français, 2 qui vous expliquera la chose plus au long. Mais dans ce moment et dans la supposition, que ma lettre ait été perdue, je vous dirai en peu de mots ce que sont les Douchoborys et pourquoi ils souffrent. If, in his long and seemingly unsuccessful career, Mr. Ballou has experienced moments of depression in thinking that his efforts have been vain; he has only partaken of the fate of his and our Master. Tell him please, that his efforts have not been vain, they give great strength to people, as I can judge from myself. In those tracts I found all the objections that are generally made against «non-resistance» victoriously answered and also the true basis of the doctrine. I will endeavor to translate and propagate as much as I can, the works of Mr. Ballou, and I not only hope, but am convinced, that the time is come, «when the dead hear the voice of the Son of god; and they that hear shall live». I do not think it necessary to make a special appeal to the Quakers because this appeal is included in the one adressed to all Englishmen, but if you think it necessary I will do it. Я тем более расположен ему последовать, что духоборы находятся сейчас в очень трудном положении. Там, где они живут, их преследуют самым ужасным образом, так что за последние два года они потеряли большую часть своего имущества; а одна часть их, более 400 семей, потеряла 25% своих членов от нужды и болезней; теперь им разрешено эмигрировать, чего они не могут сделать без посторонней помощи. Я написал об этом в русские газеты, но боюсь, что русская цензура не пропустит, а также послал обращение к английскому и американскому обществу — моим друзьям в Эссексе (В. Чертков, Малдон), прося их перевести мое письмо и послать его в Times и в New York Herald.
