Часть текста: the same thing. The book made such a impression on me that I wished it to be translated in Russian and sent it to a friend of mine 2 for that purpose. I quite endorse the opinion of the Revue d’Economie politique, 3 that it is a quite new and more élevé aspect of socialism. If my opinion of your book can be of any use to you I quite conscientiously say that I highly apreciate your book, the ideas exposed in it and the expression of them Yours truly L. Tolstoy.

Часть текста: is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small clique, composed of persons utterly alien in thought and aspiration and altogether inferior to those whom they enslave. These causes, as...

Часть текста: of Religions and thank you for both. Many articles are very interesting, but I am sorry that they are for the most part polemic against the Churches. I don’t say that they are not convincing, but I think that they are useless. I read also «The teachings of the promised Messiah». It is quite true that they don’t contain anything quite against reason but I have not found in them anything now or expressed better than it was expressed before. I quite agree with you that the greatest evil of our time is the absence of true religion, and I think that every person which has in itself a religious feeling must try to communicate it to his neighbours by all means, especially by a good life. And that is all what we want and therefore ought to do in our time. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 23 August 1903.

But this is an illusion. Every community is a small island in the mist of an ocean of unchristian conditions of life, so that the christian relations exist only between members of the colony but outside that must remain unchristian, otherwise the colony would not exist for a moment. And therefore to live in community cannot save a christian from the contradiction between his conscience and his life. I do not mean to say that I do not approve of communities such as your commonwealth, or that I do not think them to be a good thing. On the contrary, I approve of them with all my heart and am very interested in your commonwealth and wish it the greatest success. I think that every man who can free himself from the conditions of wordly life without breaking the ties of love — love the main principle in the name of which he seeks new forms of life — I think such a man not only must, but naturally join people who have the same beliefs and who try to live up to them. If I were free I would immediately even at my age join such a colony. I only wished to say that the mere forming of communities is not a solution for the christian problem, but is only one of the means of its solution. The revolution that is going on for the...

Часть текста: deeds is, that words are always intended for men for their aprobation, but deeds can be done only for God. Though it is possible to utter words only with the intention to fulfill the will of God it is very difficult not to think about the impression w[h]ich they will produce on men and not to form them accordingly. But deeds you can do quite unknown to men only for God. And such deeds are the greatest joy that a man can experience. As to his plan to live amongst prostitutes and tramps... I can not say that I approuve of it. Rather not. I think that to change own’s habitual life for such a one a man must [be] quite sure to be proof against the new temptations that will assail him in this new life. This refers also to your doubts about your life. I think that the changes in our life must come from the impossibility to live otherwise than accordingly to the demands of our conscience but not from our mental resolution to try a new form of life. I was glad to hear all what you write about your society 1 and yourself and thank you for your letter. Your friend Leo Tolstoy.

1 and I got quite new views of the matter. At the same time I was reading the books I could get about communiti’s in America. I read Noyes 2 book and a book of a German 3 whose name I forgot. In those books I found quite new notions for me about the Shakers. At the same time I received a letter from a Shaker with books, treats and three photographs. I read the books and was very thankfull to the brother, 4 who sent me them, but infortunally I lost the letter with the address, so that I could not answer and thank him. Now I received your books, and treats and letter. I read it all and thank you for it. All this strengthens my vews on marriage, which I expose in my book that I am just now finishing. I think that the ideal of a christian always was and must be complete chastity and appreciate very much your books about that matter. I know that you, shakers, speak always the truth and therefore expect the same from others. So I will tell you frankly all what I think of your religious views. I think that you profess the true christian religion and the true christian life, but you believe in two things in which I never can believe and you ought not: firstly, in the saintity of the whole Bible, including in it the old Testament, the Epistles and the Revelation of mother Ann, 5 and secondly that you believe in manifestation of spirits. The true revelation of God is only in the words...

Часть текста: to judge rightly on the merits of literary works, and therefore, notwithstanding my wishes, I cannot partake the temporary illusion of some friends of mine, which seem to be sure, that my works must occupy some place in the Russian literature. Quite sincerely not knowing, if my works shall be read after hundred years, or will be forgotten in a hundred days, I do not wish to take a ridiculous part in the very probable mistake of my friends. Hoping, that on consideration of my motives you will kindly excuse my refusal, I am Yours faithfully C. L. Tolstoy. London. M-r Ralston. Exquire. 8 Alfred Place. Bedford Square.

Я. П . Dear young friend, Your letter gave me great pleasure. I think that you are quite right in your appreciation of the church and state superstition. But I don’t agree with you in your idea that the brotherhood of men is the aim to which ought to tend all our activity. The brotherhood of men is not an aim to which we must tend but the necessary result of our rightly, by our religious consciousness, i. e. by the establishment of the relation of our life to the All, to God, directed activity. — This religious consciousness requires from us a strongly definite line of conduct and the brotherhood of men is only one of the many goods which necessarily results from such a conduct. May be that you are of the same conviction and therefore what I say to you is quite useless. In any case I think that you are in the right way and I wish you progress on it. I will be glad to know more of your life. Your friend  27 January 1905. Leo Tolstoy.

The metaphysical religious idea of the doctrine of Krishna, so well exposed in your book, is the eternal and universal foundation of all true philosophies and all religions. The truth that the principle of all that exists we cannot otherwise feel and understand than as Love and that the soul of man is an emanation of this principle, the development of which is what we call human life — is a truth that is more or less consciously felt by every man and therefore accessible to the most scientifically developed minds as well as to the most simple. This truth is the foundation of the religion of Krishna and of all religions. But in the religion of Krishna, as well as in all ancient religions, there are statements which not only cannot be proved, but which are clearly products of uncontrolled imagination and which, moreover, are quite unnecessary for the conception of the essential truth and the affirmation of rules of conduct which flow out of the fundamental principle. Such are all the cosmological and historical affirmations of creations, durability of the world, all the stories of miracles, the theory of the four ages and the immoral and contradictory to the fundamental principle organization of casts. Dear friend and brother, the task which is before you is to state the truth common to all men, which can and must unify the whole humanity in one and the same faith, and one and the same rule of conduct based on it. Humanity must unite in one and the same faith, because the soul of every man — as you know it — only seems to be multiple and different in every individual, but is one in all beings. And therefore, dear brother, I think that you ought to put aside your national traditions and likings and expose only the great universal truth of your religion. Abnegation is necessary not only in individual likings...

I thank you for your very interesting letter. I quite agree with you that your nation cannot accept the solution of the social problem which is proposed by Europe and which is no solution at all. A society or community kept together by force is not only in a provisory state, but in a very dangerous one. The bonds that keep together such a society are always in danger of being broken and the society itself — liable to experience the greatest evils. In such a position are all the European states. The only solution of the social problem for reasonable beings endowed with the capacity of love is the abolition of violence and the organization of society based on mutual love and reasonable principles, voluntarily accepted by all. Such a state can be attained only by the development of true religion. By the words «true religion» I mean the fundamental principles of all religions which are 1) the consciousness of the divine essence of human soul and 2) respect for its manifestation — human life. Your religion is very old and very profound in its metaphysical definition of the relation of man to the spiritual All — the Atman; but I think it was maimed in its moral, i. e. practical application to life; by the existence of caste. This practical application to life, so far as I know, has been made only by Jainism, 1 Buddhism and some of your sects, such as Kabir Panchis 2 in which the fundamental principle is the sacredness of life and consequently the prohibition to take the life of any living being, especially of man. All the evils that you experience — the famine and chat is still more important, the depravement of your people by factory life — will last as long as your people consent to kill their fellowmen and to be soldiers (Sepoys). Parasites feed ...
