Часть текста: that we are deceived, that the organization of our life is a mockery of the teaching of Christ which we profess. That this life is miserable and sinful, and that it could he blissful and holy. And that for to attain this end we have only to shake off the ancient imposture in which we now live. Do you know the writings of Matthew Arnold? His «Literature and Dogma», Parker’s discourse on religious subjects, Garrison’s «Non-resistance» and his «declaration of sentiments»? All this and many others is the same that you and I speak and write of, viz. that Christ gave us a programme of life as an architect would have given the plan of a building and a deceiver would have stolen the plan and put a false one in it’s stead, to compromise the architect. I think that many people over the world are begining to get aware that they are Labouring under a mistake and turn to the true teaching of Christ. I think that the hour is coming, but that we must remember the words said by Christ to his disciples. «Be ye therefore wise as serpentes, and harmless as doves». We must remember that every fault of ours destroys God’s work. And therefore according to your wish I do the following comments upon your book. The faults in your book are: 1) That you affirm the dogmas of creation, redemption, resurrection and of the reality of hell and eternal torments. This affirmation cannot be proved, and cannot help to lead a Christian life and must be repulsive to reasonable people. 2) That you admit divorce, which Christ most peremptorily prohibited. Divorce cannot be admitted because it cannot be left to the will of every man to decide when he not more can live with his wife and shall repudiate her. Please receive my remarks with the same brotherly feeling with which I write them to you. I...

Часть текста: of the colony but outside that must remain unchristian, otherwise the colony would not exist for a moment. And therefore to live in community cannot save a christian from the contradiction between his conscience and his life. I do not mean to say that I do not approve of communities such as your commonwealth, or that I do not think them to be a good thing. On the contrary, I approve of them with all my heart and am very interested in your commonwealth and wish it the greatest success. I think that every man who can free himself from the conditions of wordly life without breaking the ties of love — love the main principle in the name of which he seeks new forms of life — I think such a man not only must, but naturally join people who have the same beliefs and who try to live up to them. If I were free I would immediately even at my age join such a colony. I only wished to say that the mere forming of communities is not a solution for the christian problem, but is only one of the means of its solution. The revolution that is going on for the attainment of the christian ideal is so enormous, our life is so different from what it ought to be, that for the perfect success of this revolution, for the concordance of conscience and life, is needed the work of all men — men living in communities as well as men of the world living in the most different conditions. This ideal is not so quickly and so simply attained, as we think and wish it. This ideal will be attained only when every man in the whole world will say: Why should I sell my services and buy yours? If mine are greater than yours I owe them to you, because if there is in the whole world one man who does not think and act by this principle, and who, will take and keep by violence, what he can take from others, no man can live ...

Часть текста: to write this letter for you, but I will not send it without writing you that I remember with great pleasure your visit and our conversations and especially your modesty together with your spirituality. With true brotherly love, yours L. Tolstoy. 1/14-th March 1907. Toula, Jasnaja Poliana.

Я. П. Dear Sir, My friend Mr. V. Tchertkoff has at my request written to you and Mr. Edisson 1 but I feel myself obliged to write to you personally asking you to accept my best thanks for your kindness and to transmit the same to Mr. Edisson for his present. I have received the phonograph and will always using it, remember you and Mr. Edisson. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 14 February 1908. В. (т. 89).

Часть текста: one addressed to the Dukhobortzy, and the other to me. I thank with all my heart your friends for what they say to me. I think very often of them and wish to he with them. I have this night dreamed, that I was with you in Croydon and made acquaintance with all our friends, with Mr. Baker and some ladies, and had a great discussion with them on the theme, which is to me always the nearest at heart,— that we must all of us direct all our strength, not on our outer surroundings (I saw in my dream, that yours was a community in a big house), but on our inner life. I am persuaded, that you and your friends know this as well as myself, but I write this only because the dream was so vivid, that I see the faces and remember the words, that have been said. I am not now in Moscow, but in the conntry, at my friend Olsoufieff. I enjoy the stillness of the country life, and am working but something, that I would like very much to send to you before the summer (for publication). 1 My best love to you and your friends. Your brother Leo Tolstoy.

Я. П. Dear Sir, The statement that you attribute to me is quite right in its meaning although I do not remember where I have expressed it. 1 What belongs the two so called fathers of this very hateful and disgusting child the Russian revolution — Tchaykovsky 2 and Aladin, 3 I have no idea of Mr. Aladin. Tchaykovsky I know by our mutual friend 4 as a very good, upright and sincere man. Thanking you for the pamphlet on Ernest Crosby, 5 whom I very much regret and whose memory is very dear te me, I remain, dear Sir, yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 1/14 June 1907. Toula, Russia.

Часть текста: all my intercourse with Indian religious men such as from your letter I infer you to be. I have read with great interest and profit for my spiritual life all the Braminic religious books which I have come across and will be very thankfull for the book you propose to send me. I was sorry to see that you think I do not agree with the fundamental principle of the Bhagavad-Gita 1 that man should direct all his spiritual force only to his duty, or as I express it-to his life, to love and not think of the consequences, knowing that if he lives on this principle the results for himself and for the world will be the best possible. I firmly believe this and always try to remember it and to act accordingly myself, and say it to those who ask my opinion and express it in my writings. If my conception of life is truly religious I cannot think otherwise, for this principle is the foundation of religion. And religion, true religion is and always has been one and the same ewerywhere. Thank you for the good feelings you express for me in your letter and allowing myself to reproach you for exagerating my importance, I remain your friend and brother 2 Leo Tolstoy. My friend V. Tchertkoff will send to you all my writings translated into English which can be of interest to you. L. T. 3 Febr. 1908.
