Will the agitations leaders attain their aim or only continue stirring public, in both cases sure results of whole matter will be delay of true social amelioration. Содержание этой телеграммы не вполне точно было напечатано в «Московских ведомостях», и вслед зa этим я стал получать и получаю до сих пор письма с упреками за выраженную мною мысль и кроме того запросы от американских, английских и французских газет о том, что я думаю о совершающихся теперь в России событиях. Я хотел было не отвечать ни на те, ни на другие, но после Петербургского злодеяния и тех сложных чувств негодования, страха, озлобления и ненависти, которые это злодеяние вызвало в обществе, я счел своей обязанностью высказать с большей подробностью и определенностью то же, что вкратце было высказано мною в ста словах американской газеты. Может быть то, что я имею сказать, поможет хотя некоторым людям освободиться от тех мучительных чувств осуждения, стыда, раздражения, ненависти и желания борьбы и мести и сознание своей беспомощности, которые испытывает теперь большинство русских людей, и направит их энергию на ту внутреннюю, духовную деятельность, которая одна дает истинное благо как личностям, так и обществу, и которая теперь тем более необходима, чем сложнее и тяжелее совершающиеся события. I think that you are quite right in your appreciation of the church and state superstition. But I don’t agree with you in your idea that the brotherhood of men is the aim to which ought to tend all our activity. The brotherhood of men is not an aim to which we must tend but the necessary result of our rightly, by our religious consciousness, i. e. by the establishment of the relation of our life to the All, to God, directed activity. — This religious consciousness requires from us a strongly definite line of conduct and the brotherhood of men is only one of the many goods which necessarily results from such a conduct. Часть текста: The climax was reached three years ago, when a law passed specially apllicable to Asiatics 1 , which I and many others considered to be degrading and calculated to unman those to whom it was applicable. I felt that submission to a law of this nature, was inconsistent with the spirit of true religion. I and some of my friends were, and still are firm believers in the doctrine of nonresistance to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. ...

To use coercion for a true christian is like a physical impossibility. And this impossibility is determining the position that such a man can occupy in society. Therefore I think that for a christian it is not necessary to renounce the position that he occupies for the reason of non-conformity of his position with his faith; he must only put in his position — it may be of an emperor, of a hangman, a president, a spy, a priest, a soldier, a judge — act in the position in which the christian enlightenment found him, as his conscience bids him, and the result will be just what it ought to be: he will be chassed from the position that he ocupied and that may be the best thing for him. That is what I think about the difficulty Mr. Jones is in. It is great joy for me to know that there are men like Mr. Jones professing the christian doctrine not only in words but in deeds. Give him please my respect and love. What a pitiful state of jingoistic hypnotization is your people in now. It is dreadful but gives me nothing unexpected and new. This terrible evil and superstition which is called a virtue and which is unhappily so strong in America — patriotism could not produce anything else. They do not gather grapes from thornes... I was sorry to see that you think I do not agree with the fundamental principle of the Bhagavad-Gita 1 that man should direct all his spiritual force only to his duty, or as I express it-to his life, to love and not think of the consequences, knowing that if he lives on this principle the results for himself and for the world will be the best possible. I firmly believe this and always try to remember it and to act accordingly myself, and say it to those who ask my opinion and express it in my writings. If my conception of life is truly religious I cannot think otherwise, for this principle is the foundation of religion. And religion, true religion is and always has been one and the same ewerywhere.
