Часть текста: you in the same place, in good health and in the same good disposition towards me, in which yours was written. I did not quite understand through your letter, nor through your book — your conception of life, and would be very thankful if you would explain to me your religious views. I am very much interested in the religious beliefs of the Japanese. I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man,...

Часть текста: tell you how deeply thankful we feel for the help which arrives so plentifully from your country, and let me beg you to express my heartfelt gratitude to those members of your Sunday School who have so generously contributed to our Famine Fund. With cordial regard Believe me, Yours truly Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: beings endowed with the capacity of love is the abolition of violence and the organization of society based on mutual love and reasonable principles, voluntarily accepted by all. Such a state can be attained only by the development of true religion. By the words «true religion» I mean the fundamental principles of all religions which are 1) the consciousness of the divine essence of human soul and 2) respect for its manifestation — human life. Your religion is very old and very profound in its metaphysical definition of the relation of man to the spiritual All — the Atman; but I think it was maimed in its moral, i. e. practical application to life; by the existence of caste. This practical application to life, so far as I know, has been made only by Jainism, 1 Buddhism and some of your sects, such as Kabir Panchis 2 in which the fundamental principle is the sacredness of life and consequently the prohibition to take the life of any living being, especially of man. All the evils that you experience — the famine and chat is still more important, the depravement of your people by factory life — will last as long as your people consent to kill their fellowmen and to be...

Dear Sir, I received yesterday your letter with the pamphlets and thank heartily for sending them to me. It is one of the greatest joy’s of this life for me to know that thes ame god’s work, that I am trying to do, is done by so many others. I firmly believe, that the time, when Christ’s teaching will become not only a teaching, but a reality, is very near and your writing and acting strengthen this belief». With brotherly love, yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 5 March 1894. I would be very thankful, if you should give me some particulars of your biography. III №4 — I appreciated very much the article «Plato and Shankaracharya» by Pandit Prabhu Dutt Shastri, М. А. В. T. You would very kind if you consented to help me with a work that I have lately begun, and which, I hope can be of some interest to you. I have begun a serie of expositions of all the great religions of the world, 1 the essence of which is always one and the same for all. Naturally the Vedic religion, as one of the most ancient and profound, must take in these series the first place. I wish to make a selection of the most striking and profound sentences of the Vedic religion. If you, or some your contributors, can and will help me in this matter by corresponding with me on the subject, I will be very thankful. With full esteem your friend, Leo Tolstoy. P. S. With the same mail I send you some of my books, which will, I hope, be of interest to you. 1909.

Часть текста: laboring with your hands and your freedom of all a[c]knowledged confessions seems to me to be true conditions of a christian life. But I will be quite sincere — I hope you will be the same to me — and tell you what seems to me not right in your way of living. I think that to abandon husbands wifes and children is a mistake. A Christian I think must learn to live with all men as with brothers and sisters; and husbands, wifes and children should not make an exception. The more it is difficult for a Christian to establish brotherly relations between himself and his nearest relations, the more he must try to do it. The other thing that I do not approuve is that you do not allow your children to mix with the external world. I think a Christian must not enclose himself and his children in a narrow circle of his com[m]unity, but must try to act towards the whole world as if the whole world where his community and so he must educate the children. Please explain to me your words «when we received the light». How did you receive it? and what do you understand by the word «light»? Please also give me more details of the history of your community, I will be very thankful for it. My adress is: Tula , Russia. Thanking you again for your letter I remain Yours truly L. Tolstoy. 22 September.

1886 г. Dear friend, I have been very glad to get your letter and to be informed that by the publication of my book 1 I have got brothers in AmericА. I have been lately asking the same question that you put to me of Mr. Garrison, 2 who has sent to me the life of his father. 3 Namely I have been asking if there are many persons in America who confess the true Christian religion, which has been exposed in the declaration of non-resistancЕ. In answer to your question I can state to you that there are 30 or 40 persons known to me who confess with me the Christian principles, exposed in my book and that with every year and month their number increases. We are not organized in a church and never will bЕ. I think that the sole means to get in a true church is not to organize churches or communities, but to seek only after the Kingdom of God and its trutН. We will meet there from all parts of the world, and from all different nations and religious confessions if only we are true seekers of the trutН. I shall expect your promised information and be very thankful for iТ. Leo Tolstoy.

I got your letter only yesterday and am afraid that you will not receive my reply before you start from America. We are heartily thankful to your people for their offerning and for the sentiments, which prompted them to make it. I hope to see you in Russia and then I will be very happy to give all the informations I am able to give about the places where the flour should be directed and where it should be used to the best advantage of the famine stricken population. With kind regards I am, dear Sir, yours truly Leo Tolstoy. ...

Часть текста: you for your kind letter. It gave me great joy to know that you approve of my ideas on Christianity (I received the tracts that you sent me 1 ) and was very satisfied with your views upon the diffe[re]nt expressions of religious sentiments suiting the age of those to whom they are directed. I received the tracts you sent me and read them not only with interest but with profit, and cannot criticise them because I agree with everything that is said in them. There is only one question that I should wish to ask you. You are, as I know non-resistants. How do you manage to keep communial, but nevertheless property? Do you acknowledge the possibility for a Christian to defend property from usurpators? I ask this question because I think that the principle of non-resistance is the chief trait of true Christianity and the greatest difficulty in our time is to be true to it. How do you manage to do so in your community? With sincere respect and love yours truly Leo Tolstoy. I received your tracts, you say in your letter that [you] have sent me books, did you mean them or did you send me books calling the tracts books? I received more than a year the Oregon paper World Advance Thought, sometimes. I saw in it your articles. 2 I am very thankful to the editor for sending this paper; in every № I get spiritual nourishment if it were not for some spiritistic tendency that is foreign to me. Who is the editor and how long ago has it been founded? [I] agree with all its...

Часть текста: very thankful to you and your friends for the remembrance of my birthday. 1 I would very much like to use this opportunity to present to you and your friends more vividly the significance of the case of the Douchobortsy. I have just written a letter article entitled: «The two wars», which I have no time to translate but the contents of which I would like to communicate to you. 2 I say, that in our time there were two wars going on: one the Spanish American war, which is finished, and the other war against war which is still going on and which will finish only with all the wars in the world. This is the war, that the Douchobortsy and all the true Christians are making against the Russian and all the military government. I hear that you have great heroes who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans). I got letters from Americans, who engage me to write about this noble work of their sailors and soldiers as they call it. 3 But I find that the work done by the American army and fleet was quite the opposite of noble and all these heroes are disgusting. I can imagine an old weak man full of superstitions, who thinks, that he can solve a dispute by boxing, but when I see a young a strong man who by his culture and the ideas of his time ought be know better accept the challenge of the old man and beat this silly old man and be proud of it, I am quite disgusted. And this is the aspect of the American war. I dont speak of the motives of the war, or better say the pretext, because there can not be true motives for a war, for killing people with the purpose of making people happy. So I dont speak of the pretext, but of the war itself. And in this hideous war they glorifie heroes and the whole world is silly enough to listen to all this cruel nonsense instead of faire honte à ceux qui proclament toutes ces horreurs comme des hautefaits. And in the meantime...
