Часть текста: by Vivekananda.   I Do not seek rest in that plane where the earthly gives birth to thoughts and desires, for if thou dost, thou wilt be dragged through the rough wilderness of life, which is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small...

Часть текста: success, saying that everywhere the devils were subject unto them: «In this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather, because your names are written in heaven». In other words: seek not exterior success visible to all men, do not count your proselytes, as do the churchmen & the salvation army, 1 but seek to be in the truth, never to deviate from it & success, thoough perhaps invisible to you, will follow, will certainly follow, because when a man is in the truth he will act and his action will inevitably have the most fruitful results, if even they will not be visible to him. The same is expressed in the words «Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness & all these things shall be added unto you»; & in the words: «Be ye wise as serpents, & harmless as doves». Truth in order to influence men should be complete, not clipped, not adapted to the life of men of the world. And this is always being forgotten by mankind. And owing to this the most powerful efforts have been and are yet lost in vain. Precious is not that community which we may organize at Toula or Croydon 3 with the help of those near to us in time and space, although such a community may also have its object & signification, but precious is that community of men of all times and nations, who unite in the one truth, in which I have been brought into communion with men, so distant from me in space & time, & amongst others with you. The community, which is now necessary for mankind, will be composed not of men, who will unite in order to realize certain economical aims advantageous for themselves, like that «Brotherhood of Trust», 4 of which you sent me the description but of those men, who are dispersed everywhere & have once for all renounced all wordly aims & have consecrated...

Часть текста: so very near to me. I have just finished to read your book «Krishna» and am under a very strong impression of it. I knew the teaching of Krishna before, but never had such a clear insight of it as I got from both parts of your book. Knowing you by your book I will reject all wordly considerations and be quite open with you, not fearing to hurt you by what I have to say. The metaphysical religious idea of the doctrine of Krishna, so well exposed in your book, is the eternal and universal foundation of all true philosophies and all religions. The truth that the principle of all that exists we cannot otherwise feel and understand than as Love and that the soul of man is an emanation of this principle, the development of which is what we call human life — is a truth that is more or less consciously felt by every man and therefore accessible to the most scientifically developed minds as well as to the most simple. This truth is the foundation of the religion of Krishna and of all religions. But in the religion of Krishna, as well as in all ancient religions, there are statements which not only cannot be proved,...

Часть текста: in our conversations in Moscow, 2 that you held Truth and Love as the foundation of real Life, and I instinctively approoved this view without knowing, how you explained it, and therefore I was the more interested in your article. Your arguments for perfect truthfulness always are very strong and seem to me indisputable, but I missed in your article the exposition of the relation between Truth and Love and a more profound definition of Truth than of B. Johnson. I think that Love is God, is life itself, is that, what is godly in man, and that Love, which is God and therefore infinite, being enclosed in man, tends to expand itself, and that is the motion of life, which we feel in ourselves, and that the unique means for Love to manifest itself and to expand is Truth. Falsehood, and especially falsehood against oneself, hinders Love to manifest itself and to expand. Therefore truth is so necessary and is the first of our duties; therefore also all the so often hypocritically used admonitions to love one’s neighbour are false and vain. ...

Я. П. Dear Sir, I got your two books and thank you heartily for them. It is the greatest joy of my life to know persons such as you and to see, that the ideas, which I live for, are likewise the mainspring of life unto others and are expressed in such beautiful and vigourous style, as I had occasion to notice in your two books. Both your books are remarkably good and I cannot give preference to either of them. In the «Old order and the New» the Christian truth serves to corroborate the truth of the Socialistic tendencies; whereas in the «Gospel of the Poor» it is the Socialistic, Communistic and Anarchistic theories that serve to corroborate the Christian truth, which occupies the most prominent part. Though while there is a censorship in Russia, the publishing of these books is out of the question, yet I shall get some of my friends to translate them, and will then spread them. The ennemies of the Kingdom of God have but one means left them it is to hush up the truth and make believe, they neither hear nor comprehend it — the fact of which was so...

Jassnaia Poliana Tula Dear Sir, I thank you for sending me your books. I like especially «Truth’s strength and freedom» and «Parting of the ways and some fragments». 1 It is rare to find a scientifical and medical man with a religious and spiritual view of life, and therefore I rejoice to see this view expressed in all your writings. With true regard and sympathy. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. Мне особенно нравится «Truth’s strength and freedom» и «Parting of the ways and some fragments». 1 Редкость — встретить представителя науки и медицины с религиозным и духовным взглядом на жизнь, и потому я радуюсь, находя такой взгляд, выраженным во всех ваших сочинениях. «Свободное слово», Christchurch, Hants, England, 1902.

Часть текста: to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters in the Transvaal gaols. Some of these have been very poor men, earning their livelihood from day to day. The result has been that their wives and children have had to be supported out of public contributions, also largely raised from passive resisters. This has puff a severe strain upon British Indians, but in my opinion they have risen to the occasion. The struggle still continues and one does not know when the end will come. This, however, some of us at least have seen most clearly, viz — that passive resistance will and can succeed where brute force must fail. We also notice that in so far as the struggle har been prolonged, it has...
