Я. П. Dear Sir. You write that you wish me encouragement in my work. There is no more joyful encouragement for me, than the receiving of such letters as yours. As for your questions, I will very gladly try to answer them as well as I can. 1) I have got nothing against the usual assembling of people confessing the Christian doctrine on Sundays in halls that they call churches. But I think, that these assemblies ought not to be devoted, as they usually are, to public and uniform public prayers, firstly, because the repetition on Sunday in the same words is perfectly useless, as it very soon becomes a mechanical procedure; secondly and chiefly, because in the Gospels this error is plainly pointed out and it is there definitely said (Math. VI), that one should not pray in public places, but in solitude, which is corroborated both by the reason and the experience of every man, who has ever sincerely prayed to God, as the assembly of people only distracts, makes one’s thoughts wander and diverts them. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms. One may suggest, that men of the same spirit, meeting together on Sunday, should bring to their meeting such religious books or articles which they find in ancient and modern literature and read and discuss them together; one may suggest,...

Часть текста: make for me one or two phonograph records in English or French, preferably both, of short messages not longer than four minutes in duration, conveying to the people of the world some thought that would tend to their moral and social advancement? My phonographs have now been distributed throughout all of the civilized countries, and in the United States alone upwards of one million are in use. Your fame is world-wide, and I am sure that a message from you would be eagerly received by millions of people who could not help from being impressed with the intimate personality of your own words, which through this medium would be preserved for all time. Of course the making of these records would be so arranged as to inconvenience you as little as possible, and I doubt if the whole operation would take more than an hour. If yon can oblige me in this matter, I will have one or two of my assistants go to your home with the necessary apparatus at any time that you may indicate. Please accept the assurances of my high personal regard for you and your work, and believe me. Very truly yours.

Часть текста: of the working masses, his antimilitarism and his recognition of the fallacies produced by capitalism. I do not know, but hope Mr. Bryan will stand for land reform according to the Single Tax system of Henry George, which I regard as being at the present time, of the most insistent necessity, and which every progressive reformer should place to the fore. Yours faithfully Leo Tolstoy. 08. Aylmer Maude, «The Life of Tolstoy. Later Years», London, Constable and C°, 1911, стр. 638.

Я. П. Dear Sir, I will not judge the conduct of the unlucky woman, of whom you write. It is said: do not judge for not to be judged yourself. But I say only, that in all my writings there can not be a line which justifies such conduct. I profess the сhristian doctrine, the first principle of which is the sacrifice of our pleasure and happiness to the wellbeing of our neighbour. In this case it is quite the opposite. This woman has sacrificed thе pеace and happiness not only of her husband and her father in law, but especially of her children, the eldest of which must dreadfully suffer and will suffer all his life for the shame of his mother, has sacrificed it all for the pleasure of being united without obstacles with the charming Mr. Giron. That is my opinion of this dirty story, which contrary to reason occupies the whole world. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy.

1 It is a great joy for me to know, that you believe in the practicability of Christ[‘s] teaching and that you intend to preach to your countrymen Christianity as it is presented in the Sermon on the Mount. That is a great purpose and I do not know a greater, to which a man could devote his life. But to be sincere with you I must say, that in your article, as well as in your letter, 2 I can see that you have not quite made up your mind which master you will serve: God or Mammon; will you try to obtain the personal, familial or national welfare, or try only to fulfil the will of God, making no difference between men and nations. You say, that you will try to do what you can to break down the walls of partition through sectarianism and different religious systems, and through ultra strong patriotism . You say the same usual patriotism in your article — as if there can be two kinds of patriotism — the one good, the other, the ultra strong, bad patriotism. To say that patriotism can be good, is a great delusion, and if you suppose, that any kind of patriotism can be good, you open the door to the greatest evils. Patriotism and Christianity are two opposite terms and can not be united. I have written an article in form of a letter to an English correspondent about this subject, 3 and if it interests you, you can read it in the English papers, or I can send it to you. To save the far East from all the evils of patriotism would be the greatest boon to the world, and therefore we Christians, who believe in Christ’s teaching as it is preached inthe Sermon of the Mount, we must employ all our forces to attain this aim and to be strong and work and make no compromises. I hope that you and your friends, which partake your views, will try to do it. It would be a great joy to me, if I could in any way be useful to you. With brotherly love yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 28 Jan. 1896.
