Court Chambers, Corner Rissik g Anderson Streets. Telephone N. 1635. Box 6522. Telegrams: «Gandhi». A. B. C. Code 5-th Edition Used. Johannesburg, 15-th August, 1910 Dear Sir, I am much obliged to you for your encouraging and cordial letter of the 8-th May last. I very much value your general approval of my booklet «Indian Home Rule». And, if you have the time, I shall look forward to your detailed criticism of the work which you have been so good as to promise in your letter. Mr. Kallenbach has written to you about Tolstoy Farm. Mr. Kallenbach and I have been friends for many years. I may state that he has gone through most of the experiences that you have so graphically described in your work «My Confession». No writings have so deeply touched Mr. Kallenbach as yours, and, as a spur to further effort in living up to the ideals held before the world by you, he has taken the liberty, after consultation with me, of naming his farm after you. Of his generous action in giving the use of the farm for passive resisters, the numbers of «Indian Opinion» I am sending herewith will give you full information. I should not have burdened you with these details but for the fact of your tocing a personal interest in the passive resistance struggle that is going on in the Transvaal. I remain your faithful servant M. K. Gandhi Count Leo Tolstoy Yasnaya Polyana г. Часть текста: precepts of Christianity — to act on our brethern not as on animals by violence, but by sweet reasonableness (as Mat[t]h[ew] Arnold 2 termed it) which is the only way to act thoroughly and durably on reasonable beings. Hoping that my bad English will not hinder you to understand what I mean to say, I remain, dear Sir, yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 15 Dec. 1902. Г.

Часть текста: children from their sectarian parents. So that we are made to believe that that measure cannot be used in Russia. And nevertheless the children are taken away from their parents. The parents are vainly trying in all government institutions to find justice, and have yeasterday again come to me, asking for help. I can only do two things: write the whole story in foreign papers, or try again to make it known to the Emperor. I have chosen the latter, and have again written a letter to the Emperor, which I ask you to be so kind as to forward to him. I think every one of us ought to try to undeceive him, so I hope you will not be angry with me for my request. I beg you to believe me, dear Sir, yours sincerely Leo Tolstoy. 1897. September 19. Toula. Jasnaya Poliana.

I: «... Leo Tolstoy, «The Slavery of our Times». Translated from the Russian MS by Aylmer Maude. With Introduction by Translator. «The Free Age Press», Mal don, 1900, стр. 23, это место дано в таком переводе: «... there are two hundred and fifty such goods-porters at the Kursk Station in...

Часть текста: in God, and God abideth in him. 1 Ep. John. Chap. 4. God is one Whole; we are the parts. Exposition of the teaching of the Veddas by Vivekananda.   I Do not seek rest in that plane where the earthly gives birth to thoughts and desires, for if thou dost, thou wilt be dragged through the rough wilderness of life, which is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and physical powers, in absolute subjection to a small...

I got your letter only yesterday and am afraid that you will not receive my reply before you start from America. We are heartily thankful to your people for their offerning and for the sentiments, which prompted them to make it. I hope to see you in Russia and then I will be very happy to give all the informations I am able to give about the places where the flour should be directed and where it should be used to the best advantage of the famine stricken population. With kind regards I am, dear Sir, yours truly Leo Tolstoy.

Часть текста: whole social reformation movement, which is going on now with so great intensity in the whole world. The solution of the labour question will not solve the social question, but the social question includes the labour question. And the social question can be solved only by the annulment of every kind of restraint used by one man or reunion of men over any other man or men. And this can only be done by change of public opinion. The social question will be solved only when it will be regarded by the great majority of men as base, shameful, abject and revilling a man to a beast to use violence against every other man, as to be a thief or murderer. And this opinion is more and more going to be general, and to establish this public opinion is what I have worked for with all my strength and will work for to my last day. I will beg my daughter to put my photo in this letter if she has one. Wishing you succes in your and our common work, I remain yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 17 Oct. 1895. Часть текста: view without knowing, how you explained it, and therefore I was the more interested in your article. Your arguments for perfect truthfulness always are very strong and seem to me indisputable, but I missed in your article the exposition of the relation between Truth and Love and a more profound definition of Truth than of B. Johnson. I think that Love is God, is life itself, is that, what is godly in man, and that Love, which is God and therefore infinite, being enclosed in man, tends to expand itself, and that is the motion of life, which we feel in ourselves, and that the unique means for Love to manifest itself and to expand is Truth. Falsehood, and especially falsehood against oneself, hinders Love to manifest itself and to expand. Therefore truth is so necessary and is the first of our duties; therefore also all the so often hypocritically used admonitions to love one’s neighbour are false and vain. Love is God and God is infinite, and man cannot augment God. All what a man can and must do, is to put aside all hindrances for the manifestation of God, i. e. Love, which is in him. And there is only one thing, that hinders this manifestation: that is falsehood. And not to think and to speak lies, when a man knows, that what he thinks and what he says is not true, is in the power of man. Therefore the...
