Il se trouve que l'individu, qui devait remettre la lettre et les livres à Mr. Birukoff les a gardé plus d’un mois chez lui, et je ne les ai reçu qu’apresent. 1 Ceci est la cause du retard de ma réponse. J’ai lu avec grand intérêt votre livre, ainsi que la brochure italienne. La question qui y est traitée est de la plus grande importance et, comme je vous connais pour un homme sincère, je me permettrai de l’être complètement avec vous et vous dirai toute ma pensée. Je crois qu’en toutes choses il n’y a rien de plus faux que les demi-mesures et qu’il est impossible d’enter la verité et le bien sur le mensonge et le mal. La religion est la verité et le bien, l’église le mensonge et le mal. C’est pourquoi il m’est impossible de me mettre au point de vue de ceux, qui croient que l’église est une organisation indispensable pour la religion et qu’il ne faut que la réformer pour qu’elle devienne une institution bienfaisante pour l’humanité. L’Eglise n’a jamais été qu’une institution mensongère et cruelle qui, en vue des avantages qu’elle pouvait acquérir du pouvoir temporel pour ceux qui faisaient...

Часть текста: I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man, what is the meaning of the life that he is obliged to live. You speak in your letter of the Russian revolution and the reforms that are to be in Japan. I think that there is only one revolution and one reform impending everywhere in the world: it is the destruction of not only all great states, but of all kind of states, the liberation of men from obedience to human power. ...
