Часть текста: and which will finish only with all the wars in the world. This is the war, that the Douchobortsy and all the true Christians are making against the Russian and all the military government. I hear that you have great heroes who have killed a great many nearly unarmed men (the spanishs were unarmed in comparison with Americans). I got letters from Americans, who engage me to write about this noble work of their sailors and soldiers as they call it. 3 But I find that the work done by the American army and fleet was quite the opposite of noble and all these heroes are disgusting. I can imagine an old weak man full of superstitions, who thinks, that he can solve a dispute by boxing, but when I see a young a strong man who by his culture and the ideas of his time ought be know better accept the challenge of the old man and beat this silly old man and be proud of it, I am quite disgusted. And this is the aspect of the American war. I dont speak of the motives of the war, or better say the pretext, because there can not be true motives for a war, for killing people with the purpose of making people happy. So I dont speak of the pretext, but of the war itself. And in this hideous war they glorifie heroes and the whole world is silly enough to listen to all this cruel nonsense instead of faire honte à ceux qui proclament...

Часть текста: well as I could and could not arrive at a definite solution of the question. You may be right but I think not for every person which will read the book. It can have a bad influence over persons who will read not the whole book and not take in the sense of it. It might also have quite the opposite influence so as it was intented to. All what I can say in my defense is that when I read a book the chief interest for me is the Weltanschau[u]ng des Authors, what he likes and what he hates. And I hope that the reader, which will read my book with the same view will find out what the author likes or dislikes and will be influenced with the sentiment of the author. And I can say that when I wrote the book I abhorred with all my heart the lust and to express this abhorrence was one of the chief aims of the book. If I have failed in it I am very sorry and I am pleading guilty if I was so inconsiderate in the scene of which you write, that I could have produced such a bad impression on your mind. I think that we will be judged by our conscience and by God — not for the results of our deeds, which we can not know, but for our intentions. And I hope that my intentions were not bad. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 7 December 1901....

Часть текста: the earthly gives birth to thoughts and desires, for if thou dost, thou wilt be dragged through the rough wilderness of life, which is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely occupying my attention. I will endeavour to convey to you what I think, both in a particular and a general way, about those causes from which those dreadful calamities have arisen and do arise, of which you write in your letter and which are also mentioned in the two numbers of the Hindoo magazine you sent me. The causes, owing to which this astonishing spectacle arises, of the majority of the labouring classes submitting to a mere handful of idlers whom it permits to dispose not only of its labour but also of its very life, are always and everywhere the same; whether the oppressors and the oppressed belong to the same, or, as is the case in India and in other countries, where the dominant class belongs to an entirely different nation from those oppressed. It appears especially strange of India, for here we have a people of 200 millions of individuals, highly endowed with spiritual and...

Часть текста: your own spiritual life and try to help others in the same direction. I have received the «Gospel of Buddha» which you sent me and thank you very much for it. I know the book before, but I am very glad to have it because I appreciate it very much. 1 I gave it to my daughter Alexandra to read, to whom it is new and to whom it will be profitable. With many thanks for your kind letter, believe me, dear Mr. Thompson, Leo Tolstoy. I have [been] not so very ill as I was weak, and therefore asked my daughter to write this letter for you, but I will not send it without writing you that I remember with great pleasure your visit and our conversations and especially your modesty together with your spirituality. With true brotherly love, yours L. Tolstoy. 1/14-th March 1907. Toula, Jasnaja Poliana.

Dear Sir, I received your book «The Next Step in Evolution» and have read it with great pleasure. The idea of joining thе scientific truth of evolution with the religious one of the second advent is very good and rich in application. Thank you heartily for sending me the book. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. P. S. I do not write myself, because I have been ill and am still very weak. P. S. Часть текста: and high esteem I am, yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 12 February 1907. Toula, Jasnaja Poliana. Ferris & Bertie (Bertram?) Ferris & Bertie [Bertram?] Rowe.) 1903 г. Я. П. Dear Mister Ferris & Rowe, I still am very weak, but if I was quite strong and healthy, I could not wish to discuss the matter of your creed, because our intercourse can have no good results for you and for me. All what you write in your letter has been heard and read by me hundreds of times, and I was always astonished to see that good and religious people should prefer such strange, contrary to reason and complicate theories as yours 1 to the simple belief in God and man’s relation to him as his servant — a belief that gave and gives me in all circumstances of my life a perfect guide in my conduct and tranquility and gladness of heart in life and coming death. All, what I can say to you, is that being much older than you, I think myself obliged to advise you to try to liberate yourself from the noxeous delusion under which you are labouring.
