Dear Sir, I am very sorry, that I could not answer your letter before. I was very glad to receive it. The greatest joy of my life is to know, that there are in the world men like you, who feel and think in the same way as myself, especially when they are so straightforward and sincere as you are. I am sure that the farther you will go on the way, that you have chosen, the happier you will feel yourself. I say it by experience. Our life is so short and the power of mind and love, that we have, is so great, that it is not worth the while to live it in doing the wrong thing. Without labour in this direction mankind cannot go forward; and it seems to me especially in the matter treated in your book in chapter XI, we are very much behindhand. It is strange, that last week I have written a long letter to one of my friends 1 on the same subject. That sexual relation without the wish and possibility of having children is worse than prostitution and onanism, and in fact is both. I say it is worse, because a person who commits these crimes, not being married, is always conscious of doing wrong, but a husband and a wife, which commit the same sin, think that they are quite righteous. I and some of my friends were, and still are firm believers in the doctrine of nonresistance to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters ...

The governor of the Caucasus Golitzine has told them that if they remain true to their faith they will be kept in the same position i. e. be starved to death, and that if they give in, they will be restorted to their former welfare. Many, — nearly 200 of them could not hold out and did recant from their faith, saying that they know it si wrong but they could not longer wittness the sufferings of their families. But those which remain true are in a desperate condition. They are nearly 3000, but they have in all no more than 70 000 roubles, which is not half enough for their emigration, especially because they must pay 10 r. per head for their passeports. Мои планы писать Будду видоизменились такъ: Родъ человеческiй по верамъ разделяется такъ: 31% будисты, 30% христiане, 15 Магометане, 16 — Брамины, 8 1 / 2 — Таосисты 6 и др. и 0,3 Евреи. 7 Въ числе Буддистовъ, Магометанъ и Таосистовъ есть Конфуцианцы 8 (вместе). Такъ что веръ въ мiре теперь только 6: 1) Конф[уцiанство], 2) Лаотзе, 3) Браминизмъ, 4) Буддизмъ, 5) Христiанство, 6) Магометанство. И книгъ, излагающихъ ученiя религiозныя, только 6: 1. Конф[уцiй], 2. Лаодзе, 3. Веды, 4. Буддiйская, 5. Библiя и 6. Коранъ . 9 Причислить къ этимъ можно Стоиковъ 10 и Зендавесту, 11 какъ ученiя бывшiя, но исключить Коранъ, какъ извращенiе христiанства, и выйдетъ 7 книгъ, 7 ученiй религiозныхъ, ко[торыя], мне представляется, очень не трудно изложить. (Я меньше всего знаю браминское и Зендавесту). Изъ техъ же 4, кроме Библiи, к[оторыя] я немного знаю: Буддизмъ, Конфуц[iанство], Таосизмъ, Стоики такъ легко, мне кажется, составить книги ясныя, поучительныя и подтверждающiя и даже уясняющiя вечное ученiе истины, открытое намъ Христомъ.
