Часть текста: And, if you have the time, I shall look forward to your detailed criticism of the work which you have been so good as to promise in your letter. Mr. Kallenbach has written to you about Tolstoy Farm. Mr. Kallenbach and I have been friends for many years. I may state that he has gone through most of the experiences that you have so graphically described in your work «My Confession». No writings have so deeply touched Mr. Kallenbach as yours, and, as a spur to further effort in living up to the ideals held before the world by you, he has taken the liberty, after consultation with me, of naming his farm after you. Of his generous action in giving the use of the farm for passive resisters, the numbers of «Indian Opinion» I am sending herewith will give you full information. I should not have burdened you with these details but for the fact of your tocing a personal interest in the passive resistance struggle that is going on in the Transvaal. Часть текста: LETTER TO A HINDOO All that exists is One; people only call this One by different names. Veddas. God is love, and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God abideth in him. 1 Ep. John. Chap. 4. God is one Whole; we are the parts. Exposition of the teaching of the Veddas by Vivekananda.   I Do not seek rest in that plane where the earthly gives birth to thoughts and desires, for if thou dost, thou wilt be dragged through the rough wilderness of life, which is not of Me. Whenever thou feelest that thy feet are becoming entangled in the interlaced roots of life, know then that thou hast strayed from the path to which I beckon thee, for I have placed thee in broad smooth paths which are strewn with flowers. I have put a light before thee, which thou can’st follow and thus run without stumbling. Krishna P. 212. I received your letter and the two issues of the magazine. Both were intensely interesting to me; indeed, the oppression of a majority by the minority of a people and the corruption which flows from it, is a phenomenon which has always occupied my mind and at present is entirely...

Часть текста: 1906 г. Апреля 12/25. Я. П. Kenjiro Tokutomi. April 25-th 1906. Toula, Jassnaya Poliana. Dear friend, I received a long time ago your two books 1 and your letter. It would be too long and unnecessary to state the reasons why I did not answer you till now. 2 Please excuse me for it. I hope and desire that this letter of mine will find you in the same place, in good health and in the same good disposition towards me, in which yours was written. I did not quite understand through your letter, nor through your book — your conception of life, and would be very thankful if you would explain to me your religious views. I am very much interested in the religious beliefs of the Japanese. I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will ...

Часть текста: evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters in the Transvaal gaols. Some of these have been very poor men, earning their livelihood from day to day. The result has been that their wives and children have had to be supported out of public contributions, also largely raised from passive resisters. This has puff a severe strain upon British Indians, but in my opinion they have risen to the occasion. The struggle still continues and one does not know when the end will come. This, however, some of us at least have seen most clearly, viz — that passive resistance will and can succeed where brute force must fail. We also notice that in so far as the struggle har been prolonged, it has been due largely to our weakness, and hence to a belief having been engendered in the mind of the Government that we would not be able to stand continued suffering. Together with a friend, I have...

Часть текста: tell you what seems to me not right in your way of living. I think that to abandon husbands wifes and children is a mistake. A Christian I think must learn to live with all men as with brothers and sisters; and husbands, wifes and children should not make an exception. The more it is difficult for a Christian to establish brotherly relations between himself and his nearest relations, the more he must try to do it. The other thing that I do not approuve is that you do not allow your children to mix with the external world. I think a Christian must not enclose himself and his children in a narrow circle of his com[m]unity, but must try to act towards the whole world as if the whole world where his community and so he must educate the children. Please explain to me your words «when we received the light». How did you receive it? and what do you understand by the word «light»? Please also give me more details of the history of your community, I will be very thankful for it. My adress is: Tula , Russia. Thanking you again for your letter I remain Yours truly L. Tolstoy. 22 September. Дорогая сестра, Очень был рад получить ваше письмо и узнать, что есть люди, живущие так, как вы, и что вы знаете меня и хотите вступить со мною в общение....

Часть текста: Л. Н. - Рамазесхану А. (A. Ramaseshan), 25 июля 1901 г. 120. А. Рамазесхану (A. Ramaseshan). 1901 г. Июля 25. Я. П . Dear Sir, I thank you for your very interesting letter. I quite agree with you that your nation cannot accept the solution of the social problem which is proposed by Europe and which is no solution at all. A society or community kept together by force is not only in a provisory state, but in a very dangerous one. The bonds that keep together such a society are always in danger of being broken and the society itself — liable to experience the greatest evils. In such a position are all the European states. The only solution of the social problem for reasonable beings endowed with the capacity of love is the abolition of violence and the organization of society based on mutual love and reasonable principles, voluntarily accepted by all. Such a state can be attained only by the development of true religion. By the words «true religion» I mean the fundamental principles of all religions which are 1) the consciousness of the divine essence of human soul and 2) respect for its manifestation — human life. Your religion is very old and very profound in its metaphysical definition of the relation of man to the spiritual All — the Atman; but I think it was maimed in its moral, i. e. practical application to life; by the existence of caste. This practical application to life, so far as I know, has been made only by Jainism, 1 Buddhism and some of your sects, such as Kabir Panchis 2 in which the fundamental principle is the sacredness of life and consequently the prohibition to take the life of any living being, especially of man. All the evils that you...

Часть текста: Я. П. 3/16 Febr. 1907. Toula, Jasnaja Poliana. Dear Brother, It gives me joy to address you thus because I keenly feel my brotherhood to a man who, although physically so very far, is spiritually so very near to me. I have just finished to read your book «Krishna» and am under a very strong impression of it. I knew the teaching of Krishna before, but never had such a clear insight of it as I got from both parts of your book. Knowing you by your book I will reject all wordly considerations and be quite open with you, not fearing to hurt you by what I have to say. The metaphysical religious idea of the doctrine of Krishna, so well exposed in your book, is the eternal and universal foundation of all true philosophies and all religions. The truth that the principle of all that exists we cannot otherwise feel and understand than as Love and that the soul of man is an emanation of this principle, the development of which is what we call human life — is a truth that is more or less consciously felt by every man and therefore accessible to the most scientifically developed minds as well as to the most simple. This truth is the foundation of the religion of Krishna and of all religions. But in the religion of Krishna, as well as in all ancient religions, there are statements which not only cannot be proved, but which are clearly products of uncontrolled imagination and which, moreover, are quite unnecessary for the conception of the essential truth and the affirmation of rules of conduct which flow out of the fundamental principle. Such are all the cosmological and historical affirmations of creations, durability of the world, all the stories of miracles, the theory of the four ages and the immoral and contradictory to the fundamental ...

Часть текста: that in your article, as well as in your letter, 2 I can see that you have not quite made up your mind which master you will serve: God or Mammon; will you try to obtain the personal, familial or national welfare, or try only to fulfil the will of God, making no difference between men and nations. You say, that you will try to do what you can to break down the walls of partition through sectarianism and different religious systems, and through ultra strong patriotism . You say the same usual patriotism in your article — as if there can be two kinds of patriotism — the one good, the other, the ultra strong, bad patriotism. To say that patriotism can be good, is a great delusion, and if you suppose, that any kind of patriotism can be good, you open the door to the greatest evils. Patriotism and Christianity are two opposite terms and can not be united. I have written an article in form of a letter to an English correspondent about this subject, 3 and if it interests you, you can read it in the English papers, or I can send it to you. To save the far East from all the evils of patriotism would be the greatest boon to the world, and therefore we Christians, who believe in Christ’s teaching as it is preached inthe Sermon of the Mount, we must employ all our forces to attain this aim and to be strong and work and make no compromises. I hope that you and your friends, which partake your views, will try to do it. It would be a great joy to me, if I could in any way be useful to you. With brotherly love yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 28 Jan. 1896. Часть текста: in the present unchristian organization of society. The contradictions between his surroundings and his convictions are very painful for a man who is sincere in his сhristian faith, and therefore the organization of communities seems to such a man the only means of delivering himself from these contradictions. But this is an illusion. Every community is a small island in the mist of an ocean of unchristian conditions of life, so that the christian relations exist only between members of the colony but outside that must remain unchristian, otherwise the colony would not exist for a moment. And therefore to live in community cannot save a christian from the contradiction between his conscience and his life. I do not mean to say that I do not approve of communities such as your commonwealth, or that I do not think them to be a good thing. On the contrary, I approve of them with all my heart and am very interested in your commonwealth and wish it the greatest success. I think that every man who can free himself from the conditions of wordly life without breaking the ties of love — love the main principle in the name of which he seeks new forms of life — I think such a man not only must, but naturally join people who have the same beliefs and who try to live up to them. If I were free I would immediately even at my age join such a colony. I only wished to say that the mere forming of communities is not a solution for the christian problem, but is only one of the means of its solution. The revolution that is going on for the attainment of the christian ideal is so enormous, our life is so different from what it ought to be, that for the perfect success of this revolution, for the concordance of conscience and life, is needed the work of all men — men living in communities as well as men of the world living in the most different conditions. This ideal is not so quickly and so simply attained, as we think and wish it. This...

Часть текста: are included in the Gospel. All that I read in your books is quite congenial to me and especially your sermon on «The Philosophy of Human life». I am very sorry not to be able to send you my complete answer to the «Excommunication», but I wrote to my friend in England — V. Tchertkoff (Christchurch, Hants) begging him to send to you this answer and also some of my books on religious subjects by which you will see that without knowing each other personally we come to the same conclusions because we draw from the same source: human reason, love and conscience, as you rightly put in some of your books. With respect and love Yours truly Leo Tolstoy.
