Часть текста: letter which has given me great pleasure. God helps our dear brothers and coworkers in the Transvaal. That some strugle of the tender against the harsh, of meekness and love against pride and violence, is every year making itself more and more felt here among us also, especially, in one of the very sharpest of the conflicts of the religious law with the wordly laws — in refusals of military service. Such refusals are becoming ever more and more frequent. The letter to a Hindu was written by me, 1 and the translation is a very good one. The title of the book about Krishna shall bo sent you from Moscow. 2 As to the word reincarnation, 3 I should not myself like to omit it, for, in my opinion, belief in reincarnation can never be as firm as belief in the soul's immortality and in God's justice and love. You may, however, do as you like about omitting it. The translation into, and circulation of my letter in the Hindoo language, can only be a pleasure for me. A competition, 4 i. e. an offer of a monetary inducement, in connection with a religious matter, would, I think, be out of...

Часть текста: will find you in the same place, in good health and in the same good disposition towards me, in which yours was written. I did not quite understand through your letter, nor through your book — your conception of life, and would be very thankful if you would explain to me your religious views. I am very much interested in the religious beliefs of the Japanese. I have an idea of Shintoism, but doubt that thinking Japanese men of our time can partake of this faith. I know Konfutionism, Taoism and Bouddism and have the greatest respect for the religious and metaphysical principles of those doctrines, which are the same as the fundamental principles of Christianity. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man, what is the meaning of the life that he is obliged to live. You speak in your letter of the Russian revolution and the reforms that are to be in Japan. I think that there is only one revolution and one reform impending everywhere in the world: it is the destruction of not only all great states, but of all kind of states, the liberation of men from obedience to human power. I have written a book about it (the last) which has for title «The end of the age». It has been translated into english 3 and I will ask my friend in England 4 to send you a copy, but may be you can get one in your libraries. Please let me have your opinion on the ideas expressed in that book. I thank you heartily for...

Часть текста: have looked it over and have found in it many things, that are new to me. I think, that such a book is very useful, because it makes known to each other people working the same work and not knowing their comrades. I think, that the title of your publication is too narrow. The contents are broader. It contains not only records of the labour movement, but of the whole social reformation movement, which is going on now with so great intensity in the whole world. The solution of the labour question will not solve the social question, but the social question includes the labour question. And the social question can be solved only by the annulment of every kind of restraint used by one man or reunion of men over any other man or men. And this can only be done by change of public opinion. The social question will be solved only when it will be regarded by the great majority of men as base, shameful, abject and revilling a man to a beast to use violence against every other man, as to be a thief or murderer. And this opinion is more and more going to be general, and to establish this public opinion is what I have worked for with all my strength and will work for to my last day. I will beg my daughter to put my photo in this letter if she has one. Wishing you succes in your and our common work, I remain yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 17 Oct. 1895.

Часть текста: is penetrated by a true christian spirit which incite to action and not to submission, or adaptation to the existing state of things. I was happy to read the good tidings in your letter, the more so that we see the same events in Russia and Germany and especially in Austria, I think, that indeed the kingdom of God is at hand. Are you acquainted with a German periodical edition in BuddaPest under the title «Religion des Geistes», by Eugene Schmitt. I think it should be good, if you were in communication with him. Although your book is dedicated to your grandson, I suppose you are yet a young man and therefore heartily wish you may still work for a long time in the same direction where you are now progressing, and may you experience more and more joy in the conviction, that you are fulfilling the will of him, who sent you here. Yours truly Leo Tolstoy. 10 September 1895.

Часть текста: this nature, was inconsistent with the spirit of true religion. I and some of my friends were, and still are firm believers in the doctrine of nonresistance to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. The result has been that nearly one half of the Indian population, that was unable to stand the heat of the struggle to suffer the hardships of imprisonment, have withdrawn from the Transvaal rather than submit to a law which they have considered degrading. Of the other half, nearly 2,500 have for conscience’sake allowed themselves to be imprisoned — some as many as five time. The imprisonments have varied from four days to six months; in the majority of cases with hard labour. Many have been financially ruined. At present there are over 100 passive resisters in the Transvaal gaols. Some of these have been very poor men, earning their livelihood from day to day. The result has been that their wives and children have had to be supported out of public contributions, also largely raised from passive resisters. This has puff a severe strain upon British Indians, but in my opinion they have risen to the occasion. The struggle still continues and one does not know when the end will come. This, however, some of us at least have seen most clearly, viz — that passive resistance will and can succeed where brute force must fail. We also notice that in so far as the struggle har been prolonged, it has been due largely to our weakness, and hence to a belief having been engendered in the mind of the...
