I have always been deeply affected by the seldom noticed words of Christ to his 70 disciples, when they returned from preaching and boasted of their success, saying that everywhere the devils were subject unto them: «In this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather, because your names are written in heaven». In other words: seek not exterior success visible to all men, do not count your proselytes, as do the churchmen & the salvation army, 1 but seek to be in the truth, never to deviate from it & success, thoough perhaps invisible to you, will follow, will certainly follow, because when a man is in the truth he will act and his action will inevitably have the most fruitful results, if even they will not be visible to him. The same is expressed in the words «Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness & all these things shall be added unto you»; & in the words: «Be ye wise as serpents, & harmless as doves». Truth in order to influence men should be complete, not clipped, not adapted to the life of men of the world. And this is always being forgotten by mankind. And owing to this the most powerful efforts have been and are yet lost in vain. Precious is not that community which we may organize at Toula or Croydon 3 with the help of those near to us in time and space, although such a community may also have its object & signification, but precious is that community of men of all times and nations, who unite in the one truth, in which I have been brought into communion with men, so distant from me in space & time, & amongst others with you. The community, which is now necessary for mankind, will be composed not of men, who will unite in order to realize certain economical aims advantageous for...

I will endeavor to translate and propagate as much as I can, the works of Mr. Ballou, and I not only hope, but am convinced, that the time is come, «when the dead hear the voice of the Son of god; and they that hear shall live». The only comments that I wish to make on Mr. Ballou’s explanation of the doctrine, are, firstly, that I cannot agree with the concession that he makes for employing violence against drunkards and insane people, the Master made no concessions, and we can make none. We must try, as Mr. Ballou putsit, to mave impossible the existence of such persons, but if they are — we must use all possible means, sacrifice ourselves, but not employ violence. A true Christian will always prefer to be killed by a madman rather than to deprive him of his liberty. Secondly, that Mr. Ballou does not decide more categorically the question of property , for a true Christian not only cannot claim any rights of property, but the term «property» cannot have any signification for him, all that he uses, a Christian only uses till somebody does not takes it from him, he cannot defend his property, so he cannot have any. Property has been Achilles heel for the Quakers, and also for the Hopedale Community. 2 Thirdly, I think that for a true Christian, the term «government» (very properly defined by Mr. Ballou) cannot have any signification and reality. Government is for a Christian only regulated violence; governments, states, nations, property, churches, — all these for a true Christian are only words without meaning; he can understand the meaning other people attach to those words, but for him it has none, just as for a business man if the ground, and regulations of the game, could have no importance or influence upon his activity. No compromise! Christian principles must be pursued to the bottom, to be able to support practical life....

In answer to your letter I have the honour of informing you that this year the famine in one part of the country is not less severe than it was last [year] and that our work has been continued during this year, although not in the same measure as last. This year we have over 90 refectories (kitchens). Our means are not so ample as they were last year. Moreover we have overreached our budget, — as the want of fire wood has been greater than we expected it. Therefore every gift from American benefactors for our famine stricken peasants will be gratefully accepted. В ответ на ваше письмо имею честь уведомить вас, что в этом году голод в некоторых частях нашей местности грозен не менее прошлогоднего и что мы продолжаем нашу работу в этом году, хотя не в тех размерах, как в прошлом. Датируется на основании упоминания об этом письме в письме Толстого к жене (см. т. 84, стр. 185 и 186). Ответ на письмо консула Соединенных Штатов Северной Америки Крауфорда из Петербурга от 4/16 февраля 1893 г., который спрашивал, продолжает ли Толстой помогать крестьянам, ощущается ли нужда в эту зиму и нуждается ли Толстой в деньгах. О том же запрашивал Толстого в письме от 2 февраля секретарь Американского комитета помощи голодающим А. А. Бобринский (р. 1859). Ответного письма Крауфорда не сохранилось. Бобринский в письме от 17 февраля сообщал: «Благотворительный комитет при Американском посольстве ассигновал в Ваше распоряжение две тысячи рублей, которые мною и были переведены через Международный коммерческий банк 14 сего февраля на Ваше имя в Москву».

I think that the warfare between capitalists and workmen can not be terminated by compulsion, i. e. by force, and I was glad to see, that you are of the same opinion and that you mean under compulsion moral influence and public opinion. — I heartily wish you success in your work.
