It always seemed strange and incredible to me, that such a thoughtful and non-superstitious people as the Japanese could accept and believe all those absurd dogmas, having nothing in common with Christian truth, which constitute the substance of ecclesiastic Christianity, both of Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Lutheranism. On the contrary, I always thought, that the people both of Japan and China could not escape to accept true Christianity, which alone has the answer to those questions of life, that now face all men and call for a solution, which neither Buddhism nor Confucianism can give. All the great teachers of humanity have at all time preached the brotherhood of men, but it is Christianity alone, which points out the way, whereby this can be attained. You have translated my works, such as «the Kreuzer Sonata» etc., but I very much wish to make the Japanese public familiar with true Christianity, as I think its founder conceived it. This, as far as I could, I expounded in my book: «The kingdom of god is within you». Do you know the writings of Matthew Arnold? His «Literature and Dogma», Parker’s discourse on religious subjects, Garrison’s «Non-resistance» and his «declaration of sentiments»? All this and many others is the same that you and I speak and write of, viz. that Christ gave us a programme of life as an architect would have given the plan of a building and a deceiver would have stolen the plan and put a false one in it’s stead, to compromise the architect. I think that many people over the world are begining to get aware that they are Labouring under a mistake and turn to the true teaching of Christ. I think that the hour is coming, but that we must remember the words said by Christ to his disciples. «Be ye therefore wise as serpentes, and harmless as doves». We must remember that every fault of ours destroys God’s work. And therefore according to your wish I do the following comments upon your book. The faults in your book are: 1) That you affirm the dogmas of creation, redemption, resurrection and of the reality of hell and eternal torments. Your letter and your question confirm me in this resolution. I can not answer your question, because I can not understand it, though I see, that for you it has a very clear meaning. And therefore you see that our discussion would be quite vain. You say that my refusal to see you again is a sign of my want of love. My love to you can manifest itself only in repeating my advice and hearty wish that you should free your good and religious soul from the strange ideas that mar it, which as they say in a Russian popular asying: spoil by a spoonful of tar a barrel of honey. I know some of them, but some others, as the «Perplexed Philosopher» and others, were new to me. The more I know of him, the more I esteem him and am astonished at the indifference of the civilized world to his work. If the new Tsar were to ask me, what I would advise him to do, I would say to him: use your autocratic power to abolish the land property in Russia and to introduce the single tax system; and then give up your power and the people a liberal constitution.
