Часть текста: Africa, now for nearly three years. There is in that Colony a British Indian population of nearly 13,000. These Indians have for several years laboured under various legal disabilities. The prejudice against colour and in some respect against Asiatics, is intense in that country. It is largely due, so far as Asiatics are concerned, to trade jealousy. The climax was reached three years ago, when a law passed specially apllicable to Asiatics 1 , which I and many others considered to be degrading and calculated to unman those to whom it was applicable. I felt that submission to a law of this nature, was inconsistent with the spirit of true religion. I and some of my friends were, and still are firm believers in the doctrine of nonresistance to evil. I had the privilege of studying your writings also, which left a deep impression on my mind. British Indians, before whom the position was fully explained, accepted the advice that we should not submit to the legislation, but that we should suffer imprisonment, or whatever other penalties the law may impose for its breach. I think that Sunday rest and dedication of this day to spiritual exercise may take place in the most various forms. One may suggest, that men of the same spirit, meeting together on Sunday, should bring to their meeting such religious books or articles which they find in ancient and modern literature and read and discuss them together; one may suggest, that meeting together on Sunday men of the same spirit should arrange dinners for the poor and themselves serve those dinners; one may suggest, that meeting together men of the same spirit should confess their sins to each other and discuss them. In short one can think of a hundred different forms of worship, which should all have for their aim a mutual spiritual help and should not be mechanical, but sensible. 2) Do I believe in the resurrection and that there is a hereafter? I believe in true, i. e. indestructible life which Christ has disclosed to us and for the which death does not exist. But this life should in no-wise be understood as a resurrection to future life, as a hereafter. One cannot be too cautious in the use of terms for the definition of the true, indestructible, eternal life. If we were to say, that it will be a personal life, that we shall pass into other bodies or beings, as the Buddhists understand it in their metam-psychosis, we should be making a gratuitous assertion. I cannot agree with your opinion that Mr. Ballou «will not go down to posterity among the immortals...» I think that because he has been one of the first true apostles of the «New Time» — he will be in the future acknowledged as one of the chief benefactors of humanity. If, in his long and seemingly unsuccessful career, Mr. Ballou has experienced moments of depression in thinking that his efforts have been vain; he has only partaken of the fate of his and our Master. Tell him please, that his efforts have not been vain, they give great strength to people, as I can judge from myself. In those tracts I found all the objections that are generally made against «non-resistance» victoriously answered and also the true basis of the doctrine. I will endeavor to translate and propagate as much as I can, the works of Mr. Ballou, and I not only hope, but am convinced, that the time is come, «when the dead hear the voice of the Son of god; and they that hear shall live». The only comments that I wish to make on Mr. Ballou’s explanation of the doctrine, are, firstly, that I cannot agree with the concession that he makes for employing violence against drunkards and insane people, the Master made no concessions, and we can make none. We must try, as Mr. Ballou putsit, to mave impossible the existence of such persons, but if they are — we must use all possible means, sacrifice ourselves, but not employ violence. Unfortunately, as direct slave-owners endeavoured with all their power to retain direct slavery, which was advantageous for them, so also at the present time the wealthy classes use all their power for the retention of indirect slavery based upon landed property. In Russia, where people have never recognised landed property, this infamous action is particularly loathsome on the part of a stupid and coarse government which is endeavouring not only to retain the slaves in their servitude, but also by depraving the people to intensify their slavery in the future. There is only one religion which manifests itself by different sides to different nations, and should very much like to know the Japanese view of the fundamental religious principles. In European littеrature I could not find any vestige of it. If you can help me in this matter, if only by stating your religious views, I will be very thankful. By religious views I understand the answer to the chief and most important question for man, what is the meaning of the life that he is obliged to live. You speak in your letter of the Russian revolution and the reforms that are to be in Japan. I think that there is only one revolution and one reform impending everywhere in the world: it is the destruction of not only all great states, but of all kind of states, the liberation of men from obedience to human power. I have written a book about it (the last) which has for title «The end of the age». It has been translated into english 3 and I will ask my friend in England 4 to send you a copy, but may be you can get one in your libraries. Please let me have your opinion on the ideas expressed in that book. I thank you heartily for your letter, your books and your sympathy to me. Give please my regards to your wife and ask her, if it is not presuming too much, to write me, if it is possible in a few words her religious belief: what does she live for and what is the highest law of her life, the law to which all other human laws and desires ought to be sacrificed.
